Well, my new computer crashed, leaving me to pick up the pieces and start reinstalling FSX. I suppose, without any add-on scenery, I can just tick the box, right? All I have are some add-on airplanes.

Unfortunately not. You need to read and get the files of stuff from The "How-To" doc topic in the Avsim forum.

Without that, DX10 looks terrible - IMHO. Undecided

Hi,
I am a bit confused: if I buy and install the package from Flightsim store, do I then additionally have to do all the stuff according to Paul J' s note in the Avsim thread?

Best Regards and happy Newyear everybody?

Okay. I decided t buy SteveFX - DX10 Scenery Fixer today, and while it does a lot, it did not, from what I can see, add a few thing to fsx.cfg that are supposed to improve the performance of DX10 within FSX.

1. It does not create a profile in Nvidia Inspector (so I assume it wouldn't do one for the ATI CCC program either). Not that I expected it to.
2. The things that I found were not added to fsx.cfg:
HIGHMEM=1
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=XXX
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30
FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.1
There may be others, but I'm not sure. Whether doing them would improve the DX10 fixer changes even more, I can only guess. I am planning to try them, but not before backing up my fsx.cfg with onlly the changes that the DX10 Fixer did, or were changed through the settings in FSX control panel.

All in all though, with the DX10 Fixer, it looks very good. Grin

Yes, DX10 preview was pretty bad by just ticking the box. Flickering default scenery, etc. I'm going to have to get a lot more bored and jaded before I worry DX10, but glad those who use it have found it worthwhile.

Hello Mark, Happy New Year.
You already have yours, we still have a few hours to go.

As far as the fsx.cfg file goes, the Fixer adds only two lines which activate the level of antialiasing you select.
The only other change is that it alters D3D10=0 to =1 and back again if your deselect it in the control panel.
No need to back them up, they are redone every time you apply them with the Fixer control panel.
Of the four lines you list above, only the
[GRAPHICS]
HIGHMEMFIX=1
has any value unless one's computer is a little lacking in resources.

These are widely regarded to be the best Nvidia Inspector settings,
applied to the included FSX profile, of course.
You might find 8xSGSS is too extreme it can be at 4x.

I don't use the CCC, so I can't help there.

I have been using Dx10 for a very long time and it is a real pleasure to have all the glitches finally removed.

Regards,
Nick.

Thanks Nick.

The only problem I have with Nvidia Inspector is that half the settings displayed in that image are not available in my version. The funny thing is that I have the 1.9.7.2 (from the link in the DX10 Notes.PDF file from the Avsim forum) and it STILL doesn't show the same listings/settings as the latest version.

At least I have the same available listings as your image, but not the same settings available. For example:

In your image, you have
Antialiasing - Mode Application-controlled / Off

Whereas mine has
Antialiasing - Mode AA_MODE_SELECTOR_APP_CONTROL (with the other choices being AA_MODE_SELECTOR_OVERRIDE and AA_MODE_SELECTOR_ENHANCED)

So I am left to guess as to exactly which one I should use (AA_MODE_SELECTOR_APP_CONTROL appears to be the right one).

Same applies to the Texture filtering - LOD Bias (DX) -1.5000. Mine only has Texture filtering - LOD Bias LODBIASADJUST_DEFAULT
Mine does not have Texture filtering - LOD Bias (DX) or Texture filtering - LOD Bias (OGL) to choose from. So how am I supposed to get all those settings correct if mine differs so much? The funny thing is that this has ALWAYS been the case for me. When making the changes, half the settings do not exist in the Nvidia Inspector I am using, even though it is the same version as the one listed in the guide that I am following.

I guess my only option is to request a copy of someone else's FSX profile for Nvidia Inspector.

I added all of those lines that were missing from the guide (not added by the Fixer) into my fsx.cfg, and my frame rate dropped by about 5 fps! So now I am removing them and sticking with the changes made by the DX Scenery Fixer. Cheesy Grin

This is strange, as mine Inspector looks like the one in the previous post.
Its a while ago I updated my version - as far as I remember there are two files that need to go into the folder. I' ll just check out. Are you on the latest 331.82 driver?

Other than that - I may try this DX10 fixer out.

Anders

Aha! I opened the Nvidia Inspector zip file, and I must have clicked on (and highlighted) the nvidiaInspector.exe file). Then, when I extracted the contents of the zip file, nvidiaInspector.exe was the only file extracted. The Change.txt and CustomSettingNames_en-EN.xml files were not extracted. I must have done this with other nvidiaInspector zip files. I do know that I always read about the changes (the change.txt file), but somehow, I must be moving over to the nvidiaInspector.exe file before extracting. Winzip will always extract the Selected files if a file, or multiple files are highlighted. So that's what I have been doing wrong all this time. Shocked
The question is, how many times have I only extracted the exe file and not the Change.txt and CustomSettingNames_en-EN.xml, without realizing I had done that?

So now it looks like Nicks image. Grin

It certainly does not help my situation when I often do these things at "strange hours of the night" - like somewhere between 3am and 5am. Sad

EDIT: Yes. I am using the 331.82 whql drivers. I have downloaded the latest beta driver (331.93 beta), but due to often having trouble with beta drivers, I don't have it installed!

Hello Mark,

Dx10 ignores any AA settings in Nvidia Inspector which is why I have it set to Application Controlled.
Ticking the Antialias box in FSX display settings activates it and the level of anti aliasing is controlled by the two lines added to fsx.cfg by the Fixer.
The first line determines the AA level and the second should match the SGSS setting in NI.

Regards,
Nick

Nvidia Inspector -- I have the 770M and just use the Trilinear and Anisotropic in FSX without any third-party apps. Things look "antialiased" just fine... why would I need Nvidia Inspector? Sorry for the ignorance, but my motto is perfect is the enemy of good enough.

Nvidia Inspector allows more settings than the Nvidia Control Panel but if you are happy with what you see, you don't need it.

Nick.

Hi,

I agree with Nick.
And I will be specific about two things, that I find very important:

1)      SGSS Sparse Grid SuperSampling. Dont ask me what this translates into in English. But setting this to 2x, greatly reduces shimmering in tree tops, fences and it also reduces distant blurries on the ground. If you set it to 4x or 8x it will be eliminated almost completely.
2)       Vsync trick in combination with setting FPS=30 in either FSX or Inspector itself provides much more smoothness in the sim that I have ever experienced before.

In short, greatly improved image quality, that cannot be done in FSX itself (as far as I know). The flipside of the coin however is, that it takes a harsh punishment on the GPU- especially SGSS can be tough in this dept. And I am here talking about DX9 - havent tried DX10 yet.

BR,
Anders

Wow, that's refreshing! Thanks for not abusing me for not wanting to run more stuff  Grin When I posted about my new computer elsewhere all I got was "you could built it yourself for a tenth of the price," and "you're just buying a name, [stupid]." I'm laughing all the way from the bank, though. My computer just powers through pretty much whatever I throw at it and I'm happy. If I tried to build a computer, trust me, it would end up costing me twice as much as my off-the-shelf one and probably take out the power grid east of the Mississippi or something. If I could take the time to learn how to make a computer, I'd love it, but my degrees are in history+law, and I'm currently a theology grad student lol ... not a good background for building computers!

Well I was intrigued, and figure out how to use the Nvidia Inspector. Nothing particularly hard, but it still took awhile. But Holy Cow! Now Captain Sim airplanes look even better! I didn't know what I was missing. I don't see myself ever flying without it again.
