Hi David.

Ascent and descent is by using the Pitch Trim wheels, that's what I call them (2) in the attached image.
Heading hold is using the Heading Hold switch (4) with the Mode Selector (5) on VOR. Turn Heading hold off and it should track the radial to the VOR (not tied this yet).
To follow a default FS Flight Planner plan, switch the Mode Selector switch to TACAN. I have to fiddle with this a bit sometimes because the A/P goes haywire. I end up turning the A/P on and off a few times (this causes the Autopilot Disengaged light to come on and I can't turn it off whilst in flight).

I'm still working my way through this a bit at the moment. So that's the best I can do.

Can I change heading via the heading knob on the HIS gauge, or does it just hold a certain heading?

Hi David.

Yes you can. I put the Heading Hold switch ON with the Mode Selector Switch set on VOR, rotate the Heading Set Knob to your desired heading and it will follow.

Functional autopilot?

I posted earlier about the autopilot functions. I have fiddled with every possible combonation on the autopilot panel, and I have yet to see a response in aircraft control. I set th panel to follow an fs flight plan route, but the aircraft never turned. I couldn't get it to track a localizer nor follow a glideslope. Is this supposed to be this way? I know the B-52 is "bare-bones" systems-wise with limited functionality, is the autopilot in effect a "dummy" system?

The autopilot works!  I flew from Dyess AFB, Tx to Minot AFB, ND
following my own Flight Simulator flight plan.  Even did a ILS landing at
Minot.

VOR to VOR works also.

Read the manual and keep working with it.

Ok, cool. If it works, it works, maybe I just need to read through the manual a bit more.

It does work David. But I have had to turn the A/P off to set the buttons and/or knobs in the right position then turn the A/P back on. Other than the Autopilot Disconnected warning light staying on for the rest of the flight, I get it working.

Click on the Autopilot Disconnected light and it will go out.

It should. But it doesn't. I can click on it a hundred times during a flight but it will remain ON. If I press the button once on the ground, it goes OFF straight away. Undecided

I finally got it working...or  I should rather say, I figured out how to work it lol. It follows routes quite well for the behemoth the B-52 is. Great at tracking glide slope, etc. I think this aircraft has potential for advanced systems modelling etc.

I had a few hours last night to finally concentrate on the ap and I still cannot get it to operate correctly. I have followed the procedure and tried to go about it in a logical steps but I end up just randomly stumbling across a combination that works.
Often the nav switch and a few others will rapidy flick up and down as if not wanting to accept the command. The "pos3" or the ap trim turn device with the pic of the b52 on it as shown in the pic only works every now and then. I have to drag and pull it and its very very tedious. Often it will take off spinning and getting it to center on 0 is dam near impossible. Maybe a reinstall is in order?

As far as specific AP controls, look at the image in the post above. There are (5) specific controls you only need to be concerned with. Theflight director switch,  heading bug on the HSI (so you can set the heading you want the AP to fly), The overhead VOR selector, and items 4 and 5 in the image above. Lets say you are about to take off...first set the flight director on the front panel left of the yoke as you taxi to the active. You will probably be flying ATC vectors to get you on course, so intitially you will be flying in heading track mode, so set item 5 in the above image to VOR, set heading to manual (item 4). When you take off, turn the AP on, the turn the heading bug to desired heading. You can control your descent, ascent rates eith the pitch trim wheels next to the AP panel. When you are on course, quickly turn AP off, set heading hold to normal, item number 4 to tacan, then turn the AP back on. Then it will track your MSFS flight plan.

Thanks for your help but under no setting I have ran across does the ap track the heading bug. I can move the ap turn control ,the one with the B52 on it, and the plane will bank in that direction. However its extremely clunky in its operation. I will tinker more later but as you state there is not much to it. I can go from cold and dark to take off with the most complicated of planes so obviously something is wrong on my end. I will reinstall later and see if that clears it up.

The Autopilot is weird, to me, because sometimes when I switch to heading hold (from just using TACAN) the Mode Selector Switch starts flicking between TACAN and VOR and the Heading Hold switch flicks back to OFF. What I then do is turn the Autopilot OFF, turn the Heading Hold Switch ON, turn the Mode Selector Switch to VOR and then turn the Autopilot back ON. It works fine then, except for the AUTOPILOT DISCONNECTED warning light staying on. A couple of times recently the warning light has actually gone off!!!

I sometimes need to do this in the reverse. I'm using Heading Hold and switch to TACAN and get the same shenanigans as I said before and I need to turn the A/P OFF, Heading Hold Switch OFF, Mode Selector Switch to TACAN and A/P ON. A/P works fine again.

Beats me. But I could be doing some wrong and just don't know what it is.
