I set my approach speed to 170 and I landed in the middle of the runway. What is a good approach speed? Do I turn the autopilot off when i land? or what

170 does sound a bit high to maintain the glide slope.

I always land beetween 133-145 knots ... i think the 170 knots is not good approach speed  Huh And yes you need to turn your autopilot off when you land i think .... But you don't need to turn the speed off ...  Smiley

around 140 is about right depending on landing weight but approach is +10 so around 150 or 155 and throttles idle for touchdown should work..this is with 25-30 flaps

Alternatively, if you do program the FMC with the correct weights etc, it will tell you the exact speed required. Look on the 'Approach' option on the 'initial' menu. It will also give you the flaps required. Wink

What Daniel says is the best way to do it. Depending on your weight the approach speed varies a lot, but if you don't have better figures, mostly jets approach / land  between 130 and 140 kts (this is very aproximately) but works usually. 170 kt is to high for landing and can bump a lot and even you can miss the end of the runway at high speed    .

Hope it helps for better flights !!

the landing speed varies due to fuel weight and wind... which is always different ..
what i have been doing for years is keeping the plane level with attitude indicator on the approach..full flaps...and then flaring the nose up right before touchdown..this takes care of the speed all of the time no matter what it needs to be...i dont know if this is what real pilots do but it has worked for me in flight sim on all aircraft in all conditions

Your FMC will tell you what approach speed to use for your current weight and desired flaps setting... assuming you've set it up right before the flight.

Before you get to your approach, click the INT REF button and it will show you your approach reference, and you'll note down one side of the display it will show you what your approach should be on 20, 25, and 30 flap positions.  Fly her to the ground at about that speed, and you should be golden.
