VNAV Descend

Anyone know how to control the VNAV descends?  I get erratic descends, slow, fast, steep, shallow.  It is not nice and steady.  The speed varies up and down, it does not make sense.  What do I have to do to get descends so I don't get get an over-speed warning?  anything?  Am I doing something wrong? Huh

If you use a low Cost Index, you get a steeper descent. I use a CI of about 50 to 80 and I generally get a nice descent without any overspeed. However. The 767 seems to prefer 250 KIAS (even though the speed bug drops to 240) once it descends below 10,000 feet. This do not recall this happening in v1.4, only in v1.5.

Cost index, I normally use a 30 just for kicks.  I will try that, thank you sir!  There is hope!

I do my flights using the following format.
For long haul flights, I use a lower Cost Index of 0 - 40
and for short haul flights, I use a higher Cost Index of 50 - 100
I usually have problems slowing down on my long haul flights rather the short haul. This is because, from my experience, the low Cost Index means to ascend to cruise altitude faster, and to descend faster (shorter distance from TOD) on arrival. Of course it needs to add any altitude constraints into the equation, but the reason behind all that, is to use less fuel.

I hope this helps explain what I'm talking about.

Have you ever tried to change the flight level half way through a flight?  I tried but it did not make a difference.  If I change the FL after first setting it does that screw up the T/D?  This is to be expected because of weather changes, it should not screw your flight plan.  I'm just afraid that it might screw up my flight.  I live in fear sometimes. Cheesy

If I do a step climb during a flight with the TOD already there, it has no affect other tan to bring it nearer to account for the extra altitude.
I always fly as close to the Optimum altitude, shown on the VNAV CRZ Page, as I can, so I only do a step climb when the FMS tells me to do it NOW. Wink
