Although intended for operation with only two people, the original 737 had, with Eastern and United originally, a flight engineer option for the respective airline's aircraft. There was a third seat installed behind the two pilots' seats, much in the fashion of the Douglas DC-4/6/7. United pilots had a nickname for the flight engineer, and it was 'GIB': Guy In Back.
