All I can do is tell you what I do.

1) Turn the IRS knobs directly to NAV. Turning them to ALIGN, then aligning them, then setting them to NAV causes too many problems for me.
2) Wait until the CDU notice ENTER IRS POSITION. Enter the position. Then create the route after the alignment. This is very easy because it only takes about 30 seconds to align the IRS.

If that doesn't help. You will probably need to provide more information on how it is that you align the IRS in the 757.

Mark is correct. Don't bother with the align position go directly to NAV and enter your position. In the real plane it could take around 10 minutes to obtain the platform. During alignment the plane cannot be moved or you'll have to start all over. The CS plane aligns, as Mark said, in a very short time.

@Lou. In real life how did you align the IRS in the 757?

It would be good if the alignment time was realistic, or at least had the option for quick or realistic. Smiley

Add to that list, set throttles to zero before starting FSX!

Some reason, mine always are at mid point and after loading I shoot through the gates.

Sounds to me like you are still using the Air Creations Trike at Friday Harbor as you default start location. I use the default C172 parked and in a Cold-n-Dark situation, except for the Avionics Master Switch which is ON, and so I have never had that problem.

Mark asked how did we align the IRS's on the 757?

This goes for all the IRS's, not just 757

One of the first things after the safety check and powering the plane, was to start the alignment. Alignment would take around 10 minutes or less depending on the last position of the plane when the IRS was shutdown. If the plane was moved from the last shutdown position without first aligning the IRS's that could cause some problems as the IRS brain remembers its last position and will balk at taking the new position.

Example: The plane is moved from one gate to another without being aligned, or one of the IRS units is changed and the new unit still thinks it's at the workbench back in repair. Sometimes it was a real chore to convince the unit to take the new position.

With all buses powered, set the IRS's to NAV and enter the gate position. (You can place the unit in the align position and later switch to NAV, but going directly to NAV by-passes that step) Do this before anything else with the computer as most entries will be lost if you do alignment later. That does not include a fast align which was sometimes done right before takeoff using the runway end as a position. Fast align could only be done after the full align procedure. This was more a procedure for the older INS and early IRS units that did not have GPS to massage the position.

Thank for that Lou.

I don't use the Gate Location on the CS 757/767 CDU, it seems to point to the same location as the airport itself. I select the GPS POS (Right LSK4) as the location to enter because it is the one that matches the actual location.

Yes!
In the RW we had Jep charts with each gate down to the second. For our purposes the GPS will do just fine!
