vans,

The F/D really does not do very much in this model. TheF/D and Autopilot are in fact two separate items and only share the radio information unlike in later planes where the F/D and autopilot are connected. The F/D on the 727 does have similar modes like the autopilot and they are supposed to work the same, but I don't think the F/D really does very much.

BTW, the 727-100 is NOT an autoland plane and in the real world must be disconnected by 100 feet on the approach. The -200 has a much newer autopilot.

The Flight Director in the 727's was one of the best of its day. After flying the 707 FD - which was poor - the 727 Collins FD108 & 109 were wonderful. There were many times pilots would just hand fly the plane in bad weather using dual flight directors (Capt & F/O) and be able to do a very smooth approach even in bumpy conditions. The FD's in the newer planes are very good and the data that is fed to the FD's in the same as is fed to the autopilot, so they are synced up, which is a change from the older 707 & 727.

There are a few systems in the CS 727 that were not right. The FD is one of them, the cabin pressure is another. One of the members - CoolP has compiled a list of the known problems and CS is working to correct them.

Still, with some of these problems in the 727, I find I have a lot of fun flying the plane in all kinds of weather and even shooting engine out approaches. CS has produced a bunch of fun planes with very good flying characteristics and wonderful VC graphics. This small team is very responsive through this forum and I believe they will fix these problems and also wow us with new planes.
