Just a quick question about 'J' Hercs. What are the fairings for that are located below the crew entrance door under the fuselage.

your probebly talking baout the flare dispenser fairings.  They just keep air flow away from the flares in flight.

Thanks
I am use to flare launchers that are the size of trashcans. On the image below you can see the fairings infront of the nose gear.

yeah the big flare launchers on on the cargo door of certian models.  Here with the HC-130P's we have cargoo doors that have 10 flare lauchers.   They get loaded by the loadmaster and are controled from the front of the cargo compartment.  At FS 245 there is to control heads to launch them out by #'s 1-10.

I worked on A-Line at Lyneham. We handled all the SF aircraft. We recieved the first chaff and flare modded aircraft.
The first version had two banks of 3 launchers above the main wheel well.

The second modification included two launchers at the rear of the external tank pylon. two banks of 3 either side of the nose wheel and two launchers below the rudder in the ducks bill.
In total it could hold 147 chaff or flares. Thier is a great picture at Lyneham of the lot being fired in one salvo.

Each pilot had triggers on the yolk. The Nav had a grip stick on a long cable so he could operate from the cupola and thier were also two grip sticks on cables by each Para door for the two loadmasters.
The only down side was they put the safety flags on the launchers so we had to use ladders to safe the external tank launchers.

They eventually moved them to a collective pin holder in the cargo bay.
