ADF Tuning

Hi there,

Could somebody please explain the procedure for tuning an NDB using the ADF panel in the 727-200?

I have already read related posts on this forum indicating that master avionics should be turned on, and I have confirmed that this has been done, since I am able to tune VORs with no issues. However, no matter how close I am to an NDB, I cannot tune it. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

If anyone has been successful at this, could you please indicate the exact steps that were followed and which NDB you were able to tune? That way, I can repeat the same procedure.

Thanks for any advice!

It can be very difficult due to the fact that the frequency change with each click can vary between .2 and .4 (it also rockets through the frequencies if you hold the mouse button, which isn't bad for progressing to higher/lower numbers before using single clicks to fine tune). So I find it best to have *Cockpit ToolTips displayed so the frequency is showing in the ToolTip as I'm rotating the knob, and I can eventually settle on the correct frequency (quite a few left and right clicks as it jumps below/above the frequency before nailing it).

*Menu > Options > Settings > Display > Aircraft (Tab) > Checkmark (tick the box) Show cockpit ToolTips

Thanks for the advice Mark! Mystery solved I think.

As per your suggestion, I enabled cockpit tooltips (which only showed up for me in "windowed" mode, since I run a three-monitor display), and used the indications to tune exact frequencies for 2 NDBs that I knew were ahead of me. Once I got within 30 nm or so, the needles of the RMI (which I had set to ADF) deflected towards them.

I guess I was thrown off because I was expecing some sort of indication on the ADF panel itself, such as a centered needle on the tuning meter. There is no such indication as far as I can tell, so only the needles of the RMI indicate a successful tuning.

Is it typical for the range of the NDBs to be that short (eg. 30 nm)? That is another thing that surprised me. I guess that with a range like this, NDBs are not as useful for navigating an airliner as VORs are, unless you are lining up an approach or something.

Speaking of VORs, I also noticed that I never get any distance values appear on the DME indicator, despite the fact that I have VORs with DME capability tuned. I've only ever seen dashes. Any idea what could be going on here?

Thanks again for your help! Much appreciated!

I rarely, if ever, use the ADF on the 727, so I'm not sure if they only start to receive (respond to) the signal at 30nm, but I would have thought it would be at least 100nm. However, if they operate on line-of-sight, then the range should/would be further the higher you are flying.

It depends on the ADF I guess. Seems that they can be of different strengths. I will play with this further. Meanwhile, like you, I will seldom use them for main navigation. Thanks again for your input on this Marc!

NDB's I meant, not ADFs. Just a correction in terminology there. Smiley
