Wait—Is FSX a Dumb Move?

I had intended to install FSX on my new killer computer. But seems like P3D 4-5 is the big new thing, but with some compatibility issues. I like FSX. I don’t want to lose favorite airplanes like 727 or 757. Conceding that P3D is superior, I am not looking to buy into any complications. Aside from “P3D-5 is better,” are there any compelling reasons NOT to stick with FSX that I’ve missed? I bought a computer that should run FSX pretty smoothly.

Nothing stopping you from installing both at once. I have both installed. You sometimes run into issues with scenery conflicts but usually its just fiine.

But as for P3Dv4 vs FSX.
P3D4 is a 64bit program meaning no more memory issues.
P3D is also much more stable.
Dynamic lighting really adds a lot of immersion.  Airport lights actually light up the ground and any simobject it shines on including aircrafts.
Aircraft lights can reflect on the ground which I really like.
Also the majority of addon devs stop developing for FSX so its very rare to find a new addon.

I love  P3D4. Last I heard P3D5 has a bug with GSX where vehicle liveries don't work but that may have been fixed. I don't have v5. But you can have both installed at once if you have room.

About what % of FSX stuff is portable to P3D? I see not all Captain Sim stuff is. I suppose I could research it, but since you seem to know about this, have 3rd party devs moved products to P3D? I guess I could have three platforms installed eventually. How difficult I’d P3D to install and configure?

FSX is fine. I have FSX, and FSX-SE installed (see my signature specs), and I can't remember the last time I had a OOM problem with FSX/SE - in fact I've rarely had them in the first place. And I still like using FSX/SE.

AFAIK, most CS FSX aircraft are not compatible with the 64bit Prepar3D v4/v5, so you'll need to look at buying the aircraft that are made for them (757 Captain III, 1011 Captain II, 767 Captain II. and 737 Captain. The CS C-130 is now a default aircraft in P3Dv4/v5, so that one you get when you buy the sim.

Well, now I’m half-convinced to just start over with P3D v. 5 with the new CS 757 and L1011, both favorites. Not quite sure what “compatible” (e.g 737), II and III mean, but I’m sure it’s around here somewhere. The only question left is which version of P3D to get. I’m assuming 5, of course, but not crazy about the watermark on the academic version, and not wild about $199 for the pro version. But have I got the pros and cons figured out correctly?

While nothing stopping you from installing both at once, keep in mind that MAINTAINING both sim are hard.
I have FS9, FSX, FSXSE, P4D and XP11 on my system, while my main focuse is on FS9 and P4D.
It's like..." oh I got a new scenery I want to fly into, and that distance is just right for MD11, but I only got MD11 for FS9, and the new scenery for P4D..." etc...etc....

Good point. I think I will stick to one sim. If I ever get over sim paralysis. I’m sensing a loss of morale among developers watching MSFS2020 suck the oxygen out of the room. I’ll happily repurchase 757 III, L1011 II, 737 I (?) and, hopefully, 727 IV (have no idea about the Roman numerals—some secret code I missed along with everything else). I’ve spent hours at a big flight sim forum trying to figure out what happened in my absence. Apparently, the rise and decline of P3D and the impact of the enormous asteroid Flight-FSXX-XX. I just wanted things simple. I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue.

Tim - similar issues to yourself awaiting new high level PC capable of running P3DV5 or MSFS2020 (future proofing I think of it as my older machine just cannot be upgraded due to motherboard limitations).

I would concur with MarkOZ's view. I will reinstall FSXA onto the new machine and then install P3DV5. I am not interested in MSFS2020 and LM are well ahead of MS on the 64 bit architecture issue.

You will not be able to portover a lot of FSX stuff into P3D and virtually none into MSFS2020. But a lot of FSX stuff works just fine in P3D if it is a genuine FSX native aircraft it will go over but the guages and textures may be an issue due to the coding not working in a 64 bit environment and the texture mapping or type that is all. There a lot of folk out there working on fixes and updating for P3DV5 but everyone is sitting on the sidelines with MS2020 due to the useless SDK and changes to the sim core engine and the sheer amount of redesign and rebuilding work required to do it. I wouldn't either. I am doing some work with a couple of people do upgrade some earlier FSX stuff so it runs properly in P3DV5, mainly changing coding for gauges. The texture rework will have to come later.

As for Captain Sim well the 707 and 727 are the reasons I am reinstalling FSX but in time something will arrive for us dedicated Capt Sim folk to use in P3DV5.

I spend most of my time now preparing my box of bits of addons of aircraft, scenery etc for transfer into the P3DV5 world. Time well spent in my view.

Tim the other thing I wanted to say but forgot was that I already have FSX running just fine and never have CTD's or OOM issues it runs smooth for me so why not? I just prefer the 64 bit architecture and well thought out changes to the dynamic variables if P3D such as lighting etc besides I have had a 64 bit PC now for a decade and waiting for everyone to catch up. I run another company and other high level frame heavy models in my current FSX setup without any problems at all either.
