Touchy subject !
Dont take my word for the Holy word.

a 200LR burns 271.3lbs of fuel per minute in crz M.82

to set the reserve:

Taxi 66.6lbs per min     18minutes
burn - flight  so many hours
xtra fuel at destination, deal with ATC- hold and traffic 36 minutes
Alt destination , flight time  varies with distance
last a final reserve of 30 minutes

you add all this and it becomes your block fuel.

FSX fuel burn is full of baloney.

This is flying in real weather.

the CS777 fuel burn is right on - I have been amazed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Too much is better than not enough

We dont pay for fuel !!!  Grin

Hi,   COSTS INDEX

The airlines instruct the crew about the costs index. It may be the same for every flight or could vary from flight to flight.

Two major components.   Fuel costs and operational time costs.

The two extreme are

0   will result in maximum range and minimum trip fuel.
but will ignore the costs of time.

Conversely a Max entry, the FMC  uses the minimum time at Max speed and will ignore the costs of fuel

Airliners fall in between these two.

I fly at econ   60, it gives me a speed of 301 and a M .796
This number is realistic for a large Boeing-twin engines.

On long haul flights, I see airplanes come home 2 hrs late each flight
at M.82 -save a lot of fuel at the end of the year.  Grin

The 200LR and the 300ER have very similar flight charateristics
Airlines interchange the two on the same rte, and the same pilots fly either one  from one flight to the next.

The 300 carries more pax but the 200 has the longest legs.
Also the 200LR can be fit with three extra fuel tanks to replace bins in the cargo and extend the range to almost 9400nm   Wink

Hi,  if you do your homework properly, expect to land the 777 in a straigh in approach with 20-21,000 lbs of residual fuel at the end of a flight.
This is 106 minutes of reserve plus an alternate within 75 nm

Under the same condition the 757 will land with 9000 lbs of fuel.
I dont know why but the 57 carries 19 minutes more in reserve

Please dont come home with the FMC message  "Insufficient fuel. "
meaning FMC predict 2000 lbs or less at destination   Sad  Cry

You make it sound like the "Insufficient fuel" message should only appear if the fuel drops below 2.0 (2,000 pounds)! I get the message if the estimated fuel to be remaining at the end of the route drops below the reserve I have set. So which is it supposed to be?

Mark, a change in conditions or flight plan route causes predicted fuel at destination to be 900kg or 2000 lbs or less.

The corrective action by the crew is to modify the rte plan or cruising altitude, or divert for additional fuel.

It is a significant message of the "Alerting category" also bring an amber light on the nd

I should have written, the message will light ( or should light ).
Tonite, I made a flight with my 757. deep in the flight, my fuel prediction
at destination was 9.2 - 9.3  perfect. Then some good tail wind made me gain fuel to 10.6 - the message lit up ????? I cleared the message.

It is an FMC prediction of the remaining fuel at destination. By then you would be deep into the reserve and risking out of fuel.
There is no message that I know for " out of fuel"!!!!!!!!!   Shocked

Hi, My fuel calculation technique is working. I simply copy the airliners.

Today my wife flew ACA 925, KFLL to CYUL ( Montreal ) to visit her family - I did not go, cause they all come south in the winter time.
She flew an A320. I asked her to go talk to the capt and bring me back the flight plan + cockpit print - will see.

I chose my trusty 757-200 to make the flight at the  time, same weather ?

My fuel calculation was this way.

flight time  3hrs - avg for last 7 days of AC
180 min
45 min  at arrival ( hold, traffic ,ATC)
0  alternate - major airport 20 miles away - Mirabel
 30 min of final reserve
and 16 min of taxi at 35lbs a min.

My 57 burns 128,65 lbs per minute in CRZ.

At the gate my fuel block was 33,365 lbs.
I took off at 2.45 same as ACA - they were late 1 1/4 hr.
Initial CRZ FL340 -step up to 38 following Vnav page 2.

There is a terrain constraint of 6000, 35 miles from arrival.
FMC did it right. "RESET MCP" should work both ways , up or down.
I landed on RW24R facing a 17kts crosswind at 25 on the right.
I added 6kts to  VREF30/119 to make 125.
All was right  - flight time 3hrs and 15 min.  fuel left 9.3 - right on, my reserve and a few dust.
ACA made it in 3hrs and 11 min - same path and similar weather.

4 minutes difference over 1450 nm!!!!!!! It is scary !!!!!!

I sent a tel message to my wife saying. " You have now arrived "  Grin

Hi, have a good flight ! Wink

distance is 6788 sm
flying time - my estimation  - 12 hrs and 15 min
fly real weather, to benefit from westerly wind.

reserve is as I previously wrote.
alternate +-  90 miles is 2.4

you need a 200LR
max of M.82 in crz
initial crz at FL310, step up 2000 at a time,  4 times to FL390, every 2 hrs.

There is no direct commercial flight from your location to Sao Paulo, Br
If you get close on fuel, you can divert to Rio and go watch some exotic dancing girls  Oh La La !!!!!!!!!

Shocked  Shocked

If your rte is longer than mine, you have to make a correction on the flying time /  speed is 554kts

I think it will be right on.

The Captain Sim 777 is a bit weird when it comes to the OPT/MAX altitudes. By that, I mean it rarely shows anything other than FL301/FL344. So this might explain why the CDU/FMC is giving you the UNABLE CRZ ALT message.

I fly at between FL310 and FL350. The one thing I do to help figure out how much fuel I need for the flight, is to complete the setup of the CDU, then check the PROG page to see how much fuel is expected to be remaining at my destination. I then use the Fuel and Payload > Fuel menu to adjust the fuel so that I will have somewhere in the vicinity of 20,000 - 25,000 pounds of fuel remaining (in the CDU, my reserves will be set at about 10.0 (10,000 pounds)). The main reason I will add an extra 10-15 thousand pounds is because
(1) I have to taxi to the runway on departure
(2) the CDU/FMC is not very accurate during the CLIMB and DESCENT
(3) a tailwind or headwind will increase or decrease, respectively, the remaining fuel upon arrival
(4) I have to taxi to the Gate

The system works really well for me and I use it in all my addon aircraft that have an CDU/FMC that will give me an estimate of the fuel that will be remaining at the end of the flight.

Mark, to determine the fuel at the gate before leaving is in fact pretty simple.
It involves a little work.
First I go to my favorite flight tracking site. Flightaware, check the airliners for the same flight. I will take the average time of the last week
as my flying time. Has to be the same aircraft. In my case 777-200LR
I only do flights >4hrs.
I do shorty training flights, to fine tune my CG to come over the threshold at the required attitude of 1 or 2 degrees nose up. From that
I work to perfect my "autoland to have very smooth touch down.
From that point manual landing are fairly easy. All my CS planes fly great.

Back to fuel.

Airliners and me do this.  200LR

Taxi   18 min at 66.6lbs per minute    1320lbs
Burn  flight time in min X 271.3lbs/min  crz .82
Arrival delay (ATC, Hold etc..) 36 min
Altn  distance varies -allow 20min per 80nm
Final reserve 30 min
No add on fuel or ballast

This become your " block fuel at the gate.
It is imperative you fly in real weather  I also check the box in FSX to obtain "wind aloft in custom weather.

It works !!  Grin

Following a straight in approach, you are expected to land with 21120lbs Grin  Fly high -the 200LR goes to FL390 to save fuel
The last step up has to provide a minimum of 20 min of crz before TD
to be feasable.
Step up every 1 1/2 hr or 2 to the max.

This guy needs 221725 of fuel to complete the flight.

If we want to duplicate the flights airliners do. We have to prepare like them.

Happy flying    Shocked

Sorry ! I forgot to mention a detail about fuel and reserve.

There is a FAA regulation that control the operation of twin jets over remote area ( land or water ) called ETOPS.

This regulation provide for the loss of one engine in a decompressed situation, to divert to a suitalble airport within 180 min
at low altitude.

These critical points are identified on the flight plan with the diversion airports  to go to.
We are lucky to have well maintained aircrafts that never fail
But it is part of it !

Boeing and Airbus are trying to extend the 180min to 330min to fly anywhere on earth!!!!

Pilots train to face the unexpected.
I am a small pilot VFR day night <3000 lbs retract and adj prop.
flew a PA 28-201R, most of my flights were basically training flights
get ready for non standard conditions
I fly one in FSX, for fun, with my original flight manual.

Hi, Today, alone and with time, I decided to make the Flight from
KSEA to SBGR   Seattle to Sao Paulo Br. and test my prediction
time and fuel.

I took my trusty B777-200LR, in the Air Canada livery, out of the hangar at 9AM, loaded my forescast fuel of 221K lbs, did my preflight in order
and I took off at 6.25AM Seattle time, it was raining - no surprise there.

Initial alt was set FL290 to make it easy. The rte was a long diagonal across the country to New Orleans, on the gulf of Mexico.
From there south across the gulf and from Central America to South
again diag south east over the rain forest and then left turn to Sao Paulo.

Opt and Max did not work so I step up 2000 each time every 90 min to a max of FL370 - speed set to M .82. I crossed a storm over the rockies no damage, light turbulence, clouds over me IFR condition.
Then I benefited from tail winds around 75kts for 3 hours.
It tapered when the rte turned over the gulf.
Over the rain forest, the wind was 13kts on the nose and it lasted for
4 1/2hrs - I think FSX could not get update in this region and that was simply a default.
bracket here. I have a complete set - two large books of Jeppesen plates for all of South America, the Carabean, central America and Mexico.
each airport has about 25 pages of info. Jeppesen has very thin pages.
After I got the Atis, I picked the side of the runway I wanted to land-
2 parall runways 9/27 suitable for the 777.
So I pulled the sheet ILS rwy 09R/ Jeppesen is strong on security.
It says alt 6000 to Station VOR STN then 109 degrees to intercept LOC
decrease alt to 5200 over the next 14nm then over 3.7nm down to 4700 to intercept. There are a number of hills in the city, so I was very careful to follow the instructions, it was night time over a strange city
STN was my last wpt before the airport. Now the crosswind was a 90
at 11kts, almost max., straight on the side. set APP over STN, I am about 4 miles from intercept on a nice angle, 109 vector
////////////////////  be ready for the unexpected///////////////////////////

The plane locked at the far end of the runway rwy 27L and turned !!!!!
Still far from the runway 09 at 200kts. My Vref30 was 133 ( no additive because 90 degrees crosswind )  I disconnected AP and AT and decided to do manual from 6000, I went to the runway and headed 94 - runway heading, let the plane go in a crab, managed the flaps and speed
as good as I could and steer the plane with the ailerons to bring it back
on heading. Thank god the ILS bugs were on the ND. I dont remember any callout after  500. With the runway coming up I made a huge rudder correction to line up the runway but I was drifting left fast. Airlerons to bring it back, over the runway, drifting again I used ailerons as much as I dare -potential wing tip contact. Low enough I did a light flare, throttle to idle, touch down on one main, then the other and nose.
When I triggered rev, I knew I was ok.
I landed long on the left side of the runway , I took the first taxi off.
stopped, and took a deep breath.

Verdict.  the flight took me 12.9 hrs instead of 12.25
fuel at destination 30.4  instead of 21.1

better to be over when you fly.
I was careful to prepare, today I have no explanation
I did not have the benefit of airliners flying this rte. I gave it my best shot.  We all have limitation !!   No ??

Any landing you can walk out alive is a good landing !!!   Grin

Funny side fact!
My wife called, she got the flight plan !
Waited for the Capt to exit the plane, then asked for the flight plan
he said Why? She replied that her husband was a flight simulator addict
and that I put all this info in my plane, and added - Keeps him out of trouble !!! He laughed, opened his briefcase and gave her the whole work neatly placed in a large clear envelope. That easy !!
She will try for the return flight !   Grin  Grin

Airliners' flight plans are very valuable to us, I have a bunch !  Shocked

You're a very serious flight simmer. Much more than I am. Although I get quite a few flight plans from flightaware.com, I tend to create my own. I use FSC 9.3 (or PFPX, which I'm still figuring out).

My wife doesn't touch my Flight Sim because she isn't interested in it. She's just happy that I'm having fun with it. Wink

He Mark !
dont get me wrong, she refered to ME inputting the info.
she is not interested in my sim - but she knows I love it.
you have seen my sim, yes it is serious business here.
Right, I do this basically full time. Spend a lot of time reading
flight operations manuals for all my aircraft  57  67 and 77
I always try to get better at it. Fly each day.

I highly respect you for trying to help, 'capt" with problems
real or not real. I have none. There are known bugs in all aircraft, I try to fly around these. In my 57, Vnav will try a step climb of 2000 at 2500fpm, then I do an MCP climb at proper fpm  and then go back to Vnav. On my wish list ! someone to create a way to load the EFB with Jeppesen Plates for our popular destinations, all the plates, including descent, runways and all airnav for sids and stars, that would be something.

When she left my wife asked me to clean up the garage which I neglected. All week, I said, why do it today, I have time tomorrow.
Now tomorrow is the last day- I have not started yet !!!  Grin

Happy flying   Smiley

My wife isn't asking me to clean the computer room, but she is strongly suggesting it. This has been going on for months, so I think I'm on treading on very thin ice now. Shocked

Mark, your problem is pretty simple.  If you dont want to clean up now, some timely candle dinners and some flowers might be able to buy you some time !!!! Grin

In a previous post I wrote the 757 had extra fuel over what I have seen in other planes. My mistake. regulations in USA stipulate, enough fuel to make the flight with extra :  30 minutes, then enough for the aleternate and then an extra 45 min.  This for all IFR planes.
The other flight plans I checked was AC, different rules for IFR.
Enough fuel, regardless of weather to complete the flight. then anough fuel for alternate, one engine out, low altitude, and then an extra 30 minutes. Must have improved weather from destination in the first place.
Simple enough, two countries, different rules.

Happy flying !

PS  I also gained three flight plans.  One extra !   Shocked

Back to serious busines ??
In preparation to redo my flight from Seattle to brazil, I brought my airplane yesterday from SBGR to Miami, Fl.
Monday AA had 4 flights on this route, same plane 200LR. I used that flight time to do mine  8 hours. One longer. distance 3965 sm.
To match that time, I slowed down my CI to 33.
My block fuel was also lighter because the burn per minute is less.
block fuel at the gate 119,725.
Weight <570, means my initial CRZ can go to the top FL430, within reason, I choose FL350, and step up to FL400.
Bracket - when I went, over S America, headwind all the way, coming back again headwind, twice as strong, all the way- more than 5 hours.
Like riding a bicycle !!!!!!

My forecast on the flight burn, was such that I was to land straight in with the reserve fuel at 15.9

Then Vnav played a dirty trick on me. right or wrong my TD was so far away from destination that I questioned it for distance. The whole descent was at -1250, I leveled at 12000 at a speed of 240 still 135nm from destination, and my fuel was great, 1000 over.
That little distance, low and slow ate my fuel and I landed with 13.2, 15 minutes late.
Miami was overcast, cloud 6000, wind calm, Straight in ILS27, Vref 30 130 + 5, 135 ( calm wind -  add 5) left 11.30, landed KMIA at dusk.

Vnav this time ????  Undecided
Now I have to take my plane to Seattle !!   Grin

I've never seen the VNAV display the T/D to soon! I know I sometimes consider that it might be a bit later than it should be (or not show it at all), but never too soon. Shocked

Mark, I have never seen it either.
Here is exactly what I did.
About 500 from arrival I initiated three steps down ( 2000 at a time )
Vnav controlled. The CDU page in Vnav went to CRZ DSC like it should.
And then 50 from TD, I went to Vnav page 3, and pushed DSC NOW.
This triggers a shallow dsc of -1250fpm until you intercept the forecasted descent path. the aircraft should then resume that path.
My aircraft did not react to that and carried on the dsc at -1250 all the way. ( it would have been even worse) In a sense, my fuel saving worked. I improved by 1000 lbs. About 40 from arrival, I reset my MCP
to the ED alt of 2500. The airport alt is 10 !!!!! and completed the flight.

The intercept angle to the runway heading should be 30 deg or less.
The CDU should have an advisory message "LOC CAPT ACTIVE"
The aircraft is approaching the turn to the loc heading on course.
If the heading is modified outside the range of capture, New message
"LOC CAPT CANCELLED" reajust crs to correct.
If Vref speed has not been selected with add. new advisory message
"APPROACH VREF NOT SELECTED" input the flap setting and the landing speed.
I dont know if CS has programmed these messages, but they would be helpful to the new captains or FO in training.

Mark,  wise after the fact.  Last night I was watching a Postseason baseball game while I was reading bits and pieces of my flight manual
in the FMS section. in between innings.
I found this  ILS LOCALIZER FALSE COURSE CAPTURE
Loc false crs captures can occur when the beam and the airplane approach to the beam mis-process the deviation signal.
The false course capture is identified on the ND MAP.
Recovery
Deactivate LOC/APP.
Use HDG SEL to carry on to the runway heading to intercept
Verify proper indication in RADNAV
Rearm LOC/APP to capture proper loc crs.  Grin

Happy flying  Cool

You see Mark, the way I look at it, the better I know the airplane and its potential and limitation, the better I will fly it.
On top of the airplanes I fly , I have three set of manuals for aircraft I dont have. !!!!  DC9, MD a few models and the 737, the books dont say which one but I assume it is the curent AA 37, the 800.
I enjoy what I am doing !!  Roll Eyes

Hi,  It took me a little while but I took my B777-200LR from Kmia to Ksea. I research the flight, the time the fuel needed and set up my block fuel like I have explained.
I took off at 10AM and my plane headed west for the 2550 miles flight.
- I made an adjustment for time bercause the airline flew 2800. 6 HRS my time
As expected, headwind all the way, at times as strong as 90 to 95kts 15 or 20 deg off my heading.  The flight progressed good and as I was nearing Ksea, my fuel was right in line with a reserve of 21.1
Little wind from the north at destination but 1/8 m. visibility total overcast.
I took RW34R to land, to be fancy I added a Star and Trans.
Cleared the discon, and the rte was looking good.
My ED was gone and a new one appeared at RW34R at a height of 483'
- airport is at 433. It also included a missed approach leg and a hold away from the aiport. My ND map was a little crazy. The new TD was now within these new wpts and after being close to the airport the new rte took me east about 25 miles before coming back. I flew the plane on the legs page and monitored my ND map. Total IFR - white.
respected the speed and alt religiously in this region. No visual.
I crossed the runway 90 deg at 12000 doing 250. 3 or 4 miles on the other side I had a downwind leg.- The wpt capture stopped there and I vectored the plane to follow the rte, after the turn I capture the loc at 2800 down to 160. Up to this point, it was total IFR.  In the GS, around 900, I started to make up the aiport and the runway. At 200 I took over the landing and put her down at 132kts, 30 flaps.
total extended flight 6.8 hrs, fuel left  14.5  I was quite pleased.
Mark, you are right the Stars can be weird !  Shocked
Now, I have to plan returning to Sao Paulo !!!

I was flying American new color for that leg.

The flight to go from KSEA to SBGR is scheduled to leave tonite at midnight.

The flight will be done at CI 65 - M.798 - 303kts. initial CRZ FL310
will step up to max of FL390

In preparation, I determined my fuel burn to be 236.6 lbs per min. in CRZ FL350 at M.798. at CI 65
This is easy to do. Take your plane with a 1/2 fuel block and go to FL350
let the plane stabilize 15 minutes and read the FF of each engine on the ND. 7.1
Boeing says that # time 1000 will give you in lbs the burn over one hour.
for one engine. divide by 60 and then time 2 is the burn in lbs for one minute.

Fuel

Taxi        1200    18 minutes
burn    180999    12.75 hrs
arr          8517    36 minutes to complete the flight  ATC Hold
alt          4732     alternate 20 min
Xtra        7098     Xtra reserve - mandatory  30 min

Block fuel at the gate   202,546 lbs
Straight in should leave me with 20,347 after landing.

I looked at the map of South America and the dominant wind and strenght at this time of the year. God help me. !  Roll Eyes

It is a long flight, I will report from the pilots' lounge at SBGR sometime after landing.   Grin

Hi, a sad ending to my flight  Cry

Following the climb, I stayed up for two step climbs to FL350.
Then I retired to the crew rest area to take some rest.
The FO was monitoring the flight and he did a good job. I woke up early, crazy me, the plane was over the Gulf of Mexico flying south.
At 735 am I flew over the Panama Canal, cloud 2/10.
I returned from the galley at 830, FSX was frozen on the display,
Cry  Cry

I traced the error on my system App failed because of DLL file called iuautomotion. I went to Microsoft FSX, where I read FSX was written in 32 bits. They suggested to download the 32 bits file and to apply it on the FSX root dir. I did that. Will see.
FSX never failed before on my 64 bits system. bad timing to fail.

The flight was looking very good. I gained 24000lbs in the first part of the flight, tail wind from 75 to 95 kts, the second part was against head wind for 5 hrs. I was showing 30.6 at arrival. We will not know until I redo the flight.

Sad ! Sad!

I found a workaround to the freeze problem. Instead of ending program I make it pause then after a number of tries, then try to exit fsx. I then continue the flight out of the pause mode. I do this using ctrl alt del without ending the program, somehow I am able to restore my flying with a few attempts.
