PAINT KIT HELP!

I'm new to repainting and would like to repaint the B707-300C into a fictional livery. I use Gimp as my editor and seem to have run into a problem with the Captain Sim 707 repaint kit. When I open the files there is a checkerboard pattern that masks all the aircraft images from being visible. Is there a way to remove this layer?
