your first payware?

I bought my first payware aircraft ever in early August (the CS 757-200 and -200F) and after that freeware just isnt the same. I then bought the CS 767 a few weeks ago, and Its just like the 767, but its bigger, you can feel the weight difference, much longer ranged and I love interior.

What was your first payware product?

I bought my first payware addon in September 2005 (I just looked at the receipt) and it was the Cessna 182 Skylane II RG FS2004.

I bought my first Captain Sim addon (757-200 Base Pack v4.2) in April 2009. The 757-300 and Freighter followed very soon after that. Wink

Being very naive to the availability of payware when I first started with FSX, the only companies I was exposed to were those who worked with another company (and a few years ago, that was pretty much just CS and CLS). The only of my first few payware addons that I still fly--now that I actually know how to, you know, fly planes properly--the only one I still fly is the CS 757, although I had to buy that one again because the boxed version had some strange issues.

However, the first addon I bought where I had any clue (still not much of a clue...) what I was doing was the Captain Sim B-52.

Not completely sure exactly... I bought couple of Abacus rubbish as they happened to available boxed in local webshop (didn't have access to credit card at that time), but probably my first proper addon was 737 Classic from Feelthere/another company which was also boxed. Using it I learnt how to use FMC and then later also I learnt how to do proper startup, that has later helped me also with 737 original and NG from other developers.

My first CS bird was the 757, both pax and freigher. Not using them anymore though as it has became outdated when compared to its competition, probably then this new version will up to todays standards.

LIkewise it Abacus rubbish the Lockheed Constellation and Catalina (about 2007 or earlier) real duds actually, cheap, nasty and orrible! still got them in their boxes as a momento.

Then it was onto to first up the Capt Sim, 727, then Legendary 707, C130, 767, 707 and now the 737. Some other publishers are ok but after Capt Sim there are not many who come close to the quality of Capt Sim.

Only one other payware has come close to Capt Sim but alas I think they are defunct and they did a darn good DC-9. The remainder are so so except a well know german company who do good stuff too, scenery and aeroplanes but limited range. So much so called payware is ported MS2004 stuff which given the world of VC's (I use nothing else so that is my criteria for any model) is terrible and I hate 2D screens and pop ups.

All my other stuff is good quality freeware and some of it is excellent and a darn sight better than a lot of so called professional payware stuff.

I don't understand why Abacus put out such rubbish. I do know that their models are created using Flight Sim Design Studio (from v1 up to v3.5.1), which is one the products they also sell. My guess is that they don't want to do the hard work of tidying up the models which is very time consuming (I know because I have FSDS v2 through to v3.5.1). They just slap the models together instead of joining the parts (welding the vertices), then they do a poor job of the interior (VC) with lousy textures (not that I cam talk, I'm lousy when it comes to applying textures to my models) and selling a product that is worse than a lot of freeware aircraft. There are a few guys who have done some addon aircraft, like Rick Piper, Massimo Taccoli, Warwick Carter and Jose Angel Valdez who do awesome work with FSDS. But few of their products are sold by Abacus (mainly their early work which is not as good as their current work). I got my inspiration from those guys (many of them have helped me on a personally level) and they do great work. But to do great work using FSDS does requires a lot of time (gmax is better and faster at it) and the guys who create for Abacus just don't seem to put the extra time in.

In 1992 or so I bought an IFR simulator for MAC II that was excellent. Can't remember the name now (20years ago! IS that possible?) I probably still have the floppies cause I never throw anything away. It cost about $100 as I recall, back when that was a significant expenditure.

Captain Sim is definitely high quality. BUF flies like I remember it (without the physical discomfort). another company is excellent, tho I never flew an f/a18 in RL.   my FlightOne PC-12 and  another company products are great. I have a Carenado F33 Bonanza that seems to work just one I owned many years ago.

One of my concerns is that I hope CS and these other hi quality developers are making enough money to stay in business.

My first payware was the CS 777 Exterior in May/2011, followed by the CS 767 Base Pack... then a lot more came along.

I sometime heard about Abacus but never knew how it was, now that I've seen some videos I laughed, specially with their 787 and its crazy rudder!  Grin

I bought some addon scenery (East or West coast of USA) for my subLOGIC Flight Simulator II - for the Commodore Amiga 1000. That is my true first addon for Flight Sim, but it was not for Microsoft Flight Simulator. I never had MSFS until I bought MS Flight Simulator 95 (FS6).

Yeah Abacus is kind of weird, they are really old developer and sure could do much better job with their planes if they wanted. At least they seem to be good at programming as they have made many good editor programs.

But I have actually found a developer with even worse planes than theirs, AFS Design. Their aircraft seem to have a lot of similarities with Abacus ones.

I bought some Airbus collection package from them through Simmarket. I knew that it was in poor quality and didn't expect much (mainly bought it for A320NEO & A340-200 stuff), however it was much worse than I expected. It had some serious graphical errors that were clearly known by the developer at the time of release, however he just took screenshots from angles that didn't show these serious problems.

Also product info said that it included both A340-200 and 300 models & A330-200 and -300 models when in fact both -200 models were just retextured 300 models with fewer windows...

When I then contacted this developer he refused to fix these problems as I had written negative review about his horrible scam product. Also he kept saying that both -200 and -300 models were built individually when they were not, and when I told him that I had found out they both use same model by looking at aircraft.cfg of this addon he told me that those files installed on my computer are his property & I'm not allowed to look at them and threatened to call police  Grin

Thankfully I got refund from Simmarket.

Yeah, do a background check before purchase, you'll definitely benefit. CS passed the test with flying colours. Wink Keep in mind though now it is only a small circle of developers who make the true stuff, newer developers are certainly going to have a difficult time getting into it.
