B52 Auto Pilot

Hi Folks, I wonder if anyone would be good enough to give a step by step example of how to hold Altitude and Heading, (with Heading bug), using the Auto Pilot on the B-52.

You know, Step 1: Blah Blah, Step 2: Blah Blah Blah, and so on. I asked for the same thing on the C130 a week ago but apparently this may be more complicated than I thought because I'm not getting any bites there at all. (I'll have to repost)
Thanks

Well, i can understand it is a little confusing, because CS made the flight director part of the AP system by connecting it to the flight command indicator and there are a number of dummy switches on the AP panel. Here is (Hopefully) a simple explanation. In case you allready know the position of the gauges and switches, you can skip the first part.

If you haven't done it all ready, download part 2 of the flightmanual, because you need to know the position of a number off switches and gauges. On page 7 that is the Horizontal situation indicator (10), flight command indicator (4), the Attitude director indicator (12) and the flight director switch (63). A futher explonation is on page 12, 13, and 15. The autopilot is explained on pages 46 and 47.

(page number, switch or gauge number) in manual 2

For altitude, just switch on the autopilot (p46 sw1) and the altitude control switch (p46 sw3). The aircraft will now hold the Altitude it's on, there is no means to set the altitude or the vertical speed in advance.

For heading, set heading on the Horizontal situation indicator (p7 g10), set the heading selector switch (p47 sw2) to MAN, switch on the autopilot (p46 sw1) and switch on the flight director (p7 sw63). The aircraft should now turn to the selected heading. The heading selector switch won't go to MAN if the flight director is on.

Other modes.

Follow NAV1: Set frequence on NAV1 (p34), set course on Horizontal situation indicator (p7 g10), set nav mode selector switch to nav (p47 sw1), set the heading selector switch (p47 sw2) to NOR, switch on autopilot (p46 sw1), switch on flight director (p7 sw63).

Follow flightplan: Set nav mode selector switch to tacan (p47 sw1), set the heading selector switch (p47 sw2) to NOR, switch on autopilot (p46 sw1), switch on flight director (p7 sw63).

Localizer mode: Set nav mode selector switch to ILS (p47 sw1), switch on autopilot (p46 sw1), switch on flight director (p7 sw63). Altitude is controlled by the pilot

ILS mode: Set nav mode selector switch to ILS APP (p47 sw1), set the heading selector switch (p47 sw2) to NOR, switch on autopilot (p46 sw1), switch on flight director (p7 sw63). If Altitude hold is on. it should go out once the glideslope is intercepted.

If the autopilot is on, you can control pitch and bank with the Pitch and turn controller (p 45 sw 1-2), it will override the other modes except ILS. Click and hold mouse button left and slide left or right for bank or up and down for pitch.

Hope it's helps

Thank You Albert! I am going to print your instructions and give that a try ASAP. I'll let you know how I did as soon as I can.

BTW, Markoz and yourself have been replying to my posts but I have not been getting any notifications in my email. I have checked all the options that I have regarding this in the User CP.

Of course, I have been checking my spam too. So if I don't respond right away, that may be why. I have to try to find the problem there.
Thanks again.

Yes it is possible to do an ILS landing in the B-52.

Hey Albert, I said I'd let you know how it went. Those instructions were perfect and I succeeded in an ILS assited landing, (Glide slope and all) in Colorado Springs, (KCOS 17L).

It took me a couple of times because I was forgeting "little things". But it wasn't because of the instructions, they were perfect! Thanks again.

That orange light is ALWAYS on in my BUFF. It only goes out after I turn the battery switch off.

Gentlemen, I didn't want to start a whole new topic, this seemed the right place. Is there a way to get the AP to track NAV 2, or to display NAV 2 data on the HSI? Checked the manuals, no go.

I doubt. The nav2 readings aren't really present in the cockpit and there also isn't any switch to tell the AP gauge to listen to nav2. One would have to tweak the AP gauge I guess. Same for the FO's HSI which always shows a copy of the Captain's readings.

Sad
Too bad. Makes navigation that much harder. One more question if I may though, the FD is not indicating pitch in ILS/Glideslope mode. The AP follows the Loc/GS, but there is no steering data to the FD. Am I doing it wrong maybe?

Been looking all over for NAV2 to navigate with. Why did they even bother to put in the TACAN if it can't be used at all.

The Tacan-Mode is for following the flightplan - this was explained in post # 1  Smiley

It's like a "GPS-Mode" in the B-52  Wink For myself I added the GPS-500 popup to the panel - this facilitate the orientation a lot  Cool
