Forgot the Navigation CS?

Hey forumers,
Quick and easy question: why didnt they put navigation in the b52? It would be nice if i could fly it on vatsim but seeing as there is no navigation, I would have to use FSX flight plan, which just doesnt go... Bought this baby last night so it would be cool if you could tell me some hidden features you all are aware of/ exsisting problemos... meanwhile im going to go hit the manual.
THANKS!

Well, I'd believe it's because the B-52 is a Fun Line product, and therefore the systems programing isn't as in-depth as a pro-line product. Wink

Then why does CaptainSim have their name on it, and tell you to come to the community forum to ask questions when you never get an answer as i now see.

I have no real problems with navigation, I can create plans using High Altitude airways. I have been able to fly VOR to VOR, but it's very rare.

The only thing that I would like to have working i the B-52, is the Transponder. When flying IFR where the ATC provides a squawk code it remains as 1200 or 0000, when answering the the ATC (in all other aircraft they change). *If Captain Sim were to correct this in a future update, it would be greatly appreciated. But I'll also understand if they don't. Are there still plans to update it with the wings visible from the VC?

Mark

*I'm only adding this here because there is no B-52 Driver - It'd be nice if... forum, which is probably because it's a Fun Line product. Wink

I am good naviagaion wise with the VOR to VOR. My question is, how do I know when I am close to the destination base for my descent? I have been just looking at my map here and there but was just wondering if there was something on the instrument panel or else where to give me that info. Thanks and love the model. I used to be at a Buff base.

Check on the R.H. side of the eyebrow panel, you will find a DME limited to 80Nm (B-52 Driver manual part 2, page 9 item 32 or page 21).

thanks

This may be obvious to everyone, but I developed roundtrip B-52 navigation from takeoff to a target and then return to takeoff airport this way.  My destination for a B-52 flight was Havana,
Cuba, from Tinker AFB.  I wanted to program a roundtrip back to Tinker, but the FSX flight planner doesn't permit this.  I set the flight plan from Tinker to a checkpoint in Cuba and then back to an airport near Tinker.  This flightplan included Tinker as a checkpoint on the way back to the destination near Tinker. I simpy flew to the Tinker checkpint as a destination rather than checkpoint and then flew the approach to Tinker.

Hello Trailboss,

Do you fly the entire flight with the Nav Mode Switch in TACAN position? Have you added an addon GPS. In my case, I added a Garmin 480 as a pop-up window, this GPS integrates a transponder which is usefull because as you certainly know, Captain Sim did not implemented the default B-52 transponder.

Thanks

Rick

The way I achieve a round trip flight, is to use FSC9 (latest version is 9.1) and then save it as an FSX flight plan and then load it. FSC has been a great buy for me. Well worth the money I spent.

It is very helpful if I don't have charts, because I can use it to work out which Jet Airways or Victor Airways to use for the flight.

I highly recommend you use this freeware flight planning tool: PLAN Ghttp://www.tasoftware.co.uk/planG.htm  We use this for all our strike planning. Has more flexibility than the default planner.

I'm not familiar with FSC9, but if Markoz recommends it I'm sure it's a good solution. I haven't flown the B-52 for awhile, so I'm not sure if the control is in Tacan, I think so because I do leave the selector in the same postion for the entire flight.  I flight plan from airport of origin to an airport near origin, and then click and drag the purple course line to a destination/turn around point, and then back to the airport that is my real destination (as the second to last checkpoint) and ignore the leg to the final flight plan airport. I have not added GPS but I did add the Carousel INS and use that sometimes in lieu of flight plans to set Lat-Long coordinates as checkpoints anywhere in the world and then the Buff flies the INS legs.

So, you are the one flying the plane, not the autopilot.

Rick,

No, the autopilot is tracking the flight plan course.

Hi Rick.

I use FSC9 to create and save plans, some with SID, STAR and TRANSITIONS. I do not use the autopilot function of FSC because it doesn't work well on some aircraft, including my Captain Sim aircraft. I'm not sure if that is what you meant, but I just wanted to make it clear that I don't. Wink

I am not as proficient in FSX/B52Driver as y'all, but I do have a comment. Back before many of y'all were born I was flying B52s and the only nav we had was TACAN (useless outside CONUS), radar, and celestial (Overwater).

So, perhaps  the perceived shortcomings on B52 Driver navaids are actually realistic. Of course, if CS would add a periscopic sextant to the package, realism would be enhanced!
