Just purchased O & O Pro defrag 14. Did an optimized defrag on drive containing FSX. cs707 with all sliders maxed out and weather, I went from 20fps before the defrag to 37 fps afterwards..... not bad eh?

geez...20fps I would be happy with that! I'm at 9-11 at high density airports.

I've had O&O Defrag 14 since August 2010, and it has been set to auto defrag (optimized) and I have always had good frame rates with my Captain Sim planes in FSX since then. BUT. What makes it even harder for me to tell if the improvements were because of using O&O Defrag 14 or not, was that I upgraded my computer only a week or two before I got it. Wink

I must admit that I got it because NickN recommended it.

It's very unlikely to happen that the disc subsystem causes any fps improvements.
You may get blurry textures or even loose some (experiencing black squres then) when they can't be loaded fast enough, but no current disc drives (even SDD ones) generate fps issues or gains.
Even the main blurry factor inside FSX is CPU related and not so much disc dependent.
So the worst thing to happen are blurry textures, the best are sharp ones. No fps relationship here.

So whatever happened on your system, it surely did, but it might be related to something else. Especially such huge gains are .. wonderful.  Smiley

I have been reading several online reviews and reading forums. Raxco's Perfectdisk is supposed to be just as good, if not better. I am downloading the free trial right now. I just downloaded perfectdisk and will see if I get any performance gains. I average 23-30 FPS with mid sliders on a computer with 2 IGB video cards, 8gb RAM, and an Q9650 Quad core running at 4.2ghz with MID sliders. full slider 6-10 fps

Dont believe it at all.
The guy that claims something like that, (an improvement in fps by defrag) is talking nonsense. He probably was flying in another area, different time or weather, different airplane attitude (level-descent consumes more fps, climbing doesnt), different Ai traffic in surroundings...or many other reasons.

A very badly fragmented drive would give more loading times when starting the game, or pauses when changing bgl regions. But wont affect fps once the scenery-airplane is loaded into ram-rom memory.

It is true that all aviation forums are plagued by claims saying you should defrag and how it improved fps...but, same thing happen with medicine claims, "take this and you´ll feel better", and when you do, you think it was the medicine and not the owns body recovery. Smiley

I ran the fully functional Perfectdisk 30-day free trial...and guess what? Not one noticeable frame rate gain. It is one of those pseudo-make me feel better about my fsx performance things. Bottom Line: You won't get perfect FPS unless you have a quad core running 6GHZ with 8 gb of the fastest memory. FSX was released at least a decade before the computers were built that would be able to perfectly handle it. I overclocked my Intel Q9650 from 3GHZ stock to 4.2GHZ...to 1gb videocards on sli, and I get "playable" framerates.

Woah there Kapitan, get off that very high horse old son - I was ONLY offering my observations of MY system.

Pity such a great aircraft has such a confrontational forum.
