i found this on a forum would this be your problem

Although in some scenarios resetting the bios may solve your problem.. In most cases the problem is your video card which unfortunately is integrated into the motherboard. The video card will not post (show a display) because it has failed. This seems to be a relatively common problem in the DV5000 to DV9000 range of hp laptops. I have ran into 3 identical scenarios in the same week, and one of the new motherboards did the same thing after one day. Supposedly one of the main reasons that the video cards in this particular series fail has to do with the heat from the processors heatsink passing across the video card.

You may well be right, however diagnostics is a process of elimination, humour me, I've only been doing this for 25 years  Grin

ok - well it was worth a shot, if it isn't under warranty then it may be time for a new machine. Sorry I couldn't have helped further.

I'd say your CPU is overheating and shutting down to protect itself from further damage. Sad
