707 Liveries
Nov 2nd, 2010 at 3:07pm
Print Post
Hello All:

Just wanted to say that this 707 is fantastic!  It is a beautiful and challenging simulation. I'm not an expert on creating paints or liveries though.  I know that there is a converter to take FS9 repaints, its not for beginners.  I was wondering why CS didn't include AA,TWA and AirFrance liveries for the early 1960's.  Could anyone produce them?

Thanks!

Ray

I'm guessing these liveries were not included by default because the product we have tends to represent later, mid 70s variants of the 707. I'm certain with time some skilled texture artist will produce these skins. The BOAC is another sorely missed all time favourite of mine I'd like to see being made one day (actually working on one)

You can actually use the ones for FS9 on the the FSX 707.

Captain Sim wrote on Aug 30th, 2010 at 7:03pm:
We advisedly used Legendary 707 exterior textures layout on the 707 Captain to provide maximum of compatibility with the Legendary 707 free liveries.

All details on the Legendary 707 free liveries conversion to work with the 707 Captain will be given in the manual Part I upon the ACE and Repaint Kit release.

For now, for those who are willing manualy convert and add the Legendary 707 free liveries to the 707 Captain:

1. Take bmp files b1,b2,b5,b6 from any Legendary 707 free livery zip.

2. Create new texture.yournewliveryname subfolder in ...\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_B707-300 and copy the b1,b2,b5,b6 files there.

3. Create and copy 256x126 thumbnail.jpg into the same subfolder.

4. Convert the b1,b2,b5,b6 bmps into DDS as follows:
b707_b1_t.dds - DXT3 WITH ALFA
b707_b2_t.dds - DXT3 WITH ALFA
b707_b5_t.dds - DXT1 NO ALFA
b707_b6_t.dds - DXT1 NO ALFA

5. Add new [fltsim.XX] section to aircraft.cfg

I think you need to add a texture.cfg in the folder as well, and in it enter the following details:

[fltsim]

fallback.1=..\texture
fallback.2=..\texture\night
fallback.3=..\texture\spec
fallback.4=..\texture\bump

I downloaded and used the Qantas and John Travolta repaints on it. They will certainly do the job.

To convert the .bmp to .dds, I use MW Graphics DxtBMP.exe. It is a free tool and you can get it HERE. The download link is at the bottom of the page.

This didn't work for me, I tried to convert the prototype paint that Dave Sweetman made for the Legendary 707, and the textures were all misaligned, like what should have been at the front of the plane was halfway along! I also noticed, that Dave's was 1024x1024 but the new paints were 2048x2048, even changing the resolution didn't work!  It would be useful if the info that CS are going to include in the next revision of the manuals contains a step-by-step tutorial of the required actions to successfully accomplish a paint conversion from fs9 - fsx 707.

Cheers, Ayster

Hi ayster.

The textures being misaligned sounds like it will one of the following reasons.
1. You did not flip the images vertically before converting the .bmp to .dds
2. You flipped the textures horizontally instead of vertically.

I can get the textures from the Captain Sim free liveries for the Legendary 707 to show nicely. Here is how I did it with the John Travolta Qantas textures for the Legendary 707 (FS9):

1. I downloaded the file from Captain Sim.
2. Unpacked the textures to FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_B707-300\texture.qan2ek
3. Renamed the following files:

   b707_a1_t.bmp to b707_b1_t.bmp
   b707_a2_t.bmp to b707_b2_t.bmp
   b707_a5_t.bmp to b707_b5_t.bmp
    b707_a6_t.bmp to b707_b6_t.bmp
   qan02ek.jpg to thumbnail.jpg

   Theses were the only files I needed from the zip file.

4. Added the entry into the aircraft.cfg as follows (fltsim.15 was my next available number):

   [fltsim.15]
   title=CS_B707-300 Paint 15
   sim=csx701
   model=b
   panel=
   sound=
   texture=qan2ek
   kb_checklists=
   kb_reference=
   atc_id=N707JT
   atc_airline=Qantas
   atc_flight_number=701
   atc_heavy=1
   ui_manufacturer=Boeing
   ui_type=707-320B
   ui_variation=Qantas 2002, EK
   ui_typerole=Commercial Airliner
   ui_createdby=Captain Sim
   description=This represents John Travolta’s 707 painted for the 2002 Spirit of Friendship tour.

5. I added a texture.cfg file with the following entries:

   [fltsim]

   fallback.1=..\..\CS_B707-300\texture
   fallback.2=..\..\CS_B707-300\texture\night
   fallback.3=..\..\CS_B707-300\texture\spec
   fallback.4=..\..\CS_B707-300\texture\bump

And the added image shows how it looks.

If I wanted to change the .bmp files to .dds, I open them with DXTBmp.exe, flip image and alpha, save as DDS Texture > DDS DXT3 (or DDS DXT5). After that, I would delete the .bmp files.

Here is the result:

Hope this helps.

Hi Nathan.

The textures in use when I took the screen shot are the BMP files from within the zip file I downloaded. You DO NOT need to flip the BMP files! Only the DDS files. I did not edit them in any way at all, that is exactly how they looked straight from the zip file. Wink

Mark

EDIT: I have flipped and converted to DDS DXT3, but absolutely no other changes to the textures.

Ah, yes, I didn't do any flipping! Must have missed that part in your original post!!  Shocked
I will try again with a different livery, as TheFinn has kindly offered to do a new repaint of the dash-80.

Cheers,
A

I've just been doing a couple of things with DXTBmp and I noticed that the options for flipping the texture are as follows:

Flip Image
Flip Image and Alpha.

I always use the Flip Image and Alpha if it has alpha channel and Flip Image if it does have the Alpha Channel. Which is obvious.
There is no Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical. They are found in MS Paint. Sorry for the confusion.

Hi Mark, y am new and sorry for my English, y speak Spanish, y wanted to ask what is the name of the files y have to add to the b1, b2, b5, and b6 for the night textures on cargo models (707 legendary convert to 707 captain fsx textures), y mean no windows lights on, and y add another question, do you note that little small detailes like door handle service after door (right seccion of fuselage) or small service door window etc etc are on an incorrect position or repeated after you install the legendary 707 textures on captain 707 fsx?
Thanks you Mark, and thanks you for your patience.

hi, i think you got things mixed up. Let me make it clear

1) Cargo 707 doesnt exist yet. It hasnt been released. You cant convert legendary to Captain cargo model.

2) Instructions say to use b1,b2,b5,b6. Thats all. They say nothing about night textures. Dont touch night textures.

hope clear.

Hi Raul.

I only ever used a couple (back when the 707 was at v1.0 or 1.1) but I never looked close enough at it to notice if that was the case. Captain Sim said they used the texture set from the Legendary 707 so I can't think of why they would have that issue. I will use one of the Legendary 707 free liveries and take a closer look to see if they are there. I can't try them all though.

Hi "Kapitan", y know, y know captain 707 cargo FSX not exist already, thanks you, y was trying to explain if there is something to do with night textures from legendary 707 cargo models to get them working
on captain 707 FSX (previous conversion) with cargo repaints from legendary, y mean to make them more realistic, (light windows off, etc etc).
Thanks you again.

Hola Raul, perdoname che, ok.
I believe you cant do anything with cargo night textures in fsx 707. They are different planes. One has no windows and a big cargo door.
The other has like50 little windows Smiley its part of the model.

I too wished the night textures were better. Lets hope CS improves it in the next update.
