Ciclying through views in 2D panel very slowww!

Hello Gang!

Before I send CS Support an e-mail about this, has anyone noticed that when you look left/right/back/ or quarter views in the 2D cockpit, that it takes a while for the picture to actually paint???  Seems to me that there is some sort of issue with the way window textures are done???  I have a pretty "beefy" machine and it is incredible how much switching views takes a hit on perfromance.

Thanks for any input.

Sincerely,

Dennis D. Mullert

Hi Dennis.

I also have a pretty hefty machine and have seen the same thing happen to me. It appears to be because of the reflections on the windows, although I could be wrong. I edited the window textures and removed the reflections and now I switch view and they change faster. I guess you can only try.

Don't forget to backup the originals before you modify them!!!  Wink

Hope this helps.

Hey Mark!

Thanks for your reply.  I remember having to do this with the default FSX aircraft reflections as well to solve the same issue.  Can you tell me what I need to do with teh CS aircraft?

Thanks a Million!

Hi Dennis

This is the file I edited :- cs767_C_31_T.dds

1. I backed it up (copied it into the texture folder so it got rename to "Copy of cs767_C_31_T.dds").
2. Then I opened it with Martin Wright's DXTBmp available for free from here :- http://fly.to/mwgfx/.
3. In DXTBmp I selected from the menu Image/Send to Editor, which in my case was MSPaint.
4. In MSPaint I pressed Ctrl+A to select everything in the image, then pressed delete. Then I filled the whole blank image with black, then save it as the default name it is given norm.bmp.
5. I then went back to DXTBmp and selected Image/Reload after Edit then File/Save and saved it back into the texture folder (the correct folder and file name a selected for you with DXTBmp).

I hope that explains it well enough. If not, say so in here and I'll contact you via email with regards to sending you my edited version for you to try.

Hey Mark!

I appreciate your help man!  I tried your suggestion to no avail.  If you wouldn't mind, you can contact me at Mullert@SBCGlobal.net and maybe shoot me a copy of your file.

Thanks a Million!

Hey Mark!

I gave it another run and I believe I got it this time around.  It improves things a little bit, but still unreasonably slow to switch views, in my opinion.  I already opened a ticket with CS about it as well.

Thanks for your help!

Well it at least helped a bit Dennis.

The Captain Sim 757 & 767 are pretty heavy on the graphics in my opinion and that is what makes them look really great. If I use them with my Australian addon scenery, I really get low frame rates. Sad

The Australian sceneries are really better for low flying GA aircraft anyway, so when I fly the jet airliners I turn them off.

Mark

[Edit] I had to modify this post a little as I broke the Forum Rules. Sorry Captain Sim.

Graphics speed is just something you have to bite the bullet and ignore if you want the enjoy these airplanes.  There are some things you can do to improve, obviously, but there is a limit.  I have other airplanes I fly when I just want to not worry about graphics.  Captain Sim provides other enjoyments I think is worth the trade-off.

The only time I notice the lag in graphics refresh is when I'm taxiing, since I always am hopping outside my airplane to admire things.  I can roll a significant distance down the taxiway blind before I can see out my windows!  (Perhaps I am concealing something from the flight doc in my annual exams?)  Grin  Anyway, I have learned not to do this when a turn or traffic is coming up.

One of these days I'll have a computer fast enough I'll never have to give such things a second thought.

Food for thought folks!

I started messing around with the texture file that includes the cockpit glass reflection texture after Mark's recommendation above.  When I either deleted or "blacked out" the textures found on this file, and I loaded the 767 up for a spin, there was no lag in switching views - yes, I had black views, but a very fast switch of views - as it shold be.  This tells me that the culprit here is not the internal cockpit textures or views - it's the stinking glass reflections.  If Capt. Sim could either get rid of the useless reflections or somehow improve the glass reflection texture file to not be such a performance hog, life would be good in the cockpit.  Once I put the glass texture file back and ran the sim again, the absurd lag returned.  By the way, the name of the texture file that contains the glass textures of the cockpit is CS767_C_31_T.dds.

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys.

That was the file that I played with and removed the reflection images from. That improved the speed of switching views in the 2D cockpit and also improved the time it took to "refresh" the view in the 3D Virtual Cockpit if I did something like Tim stated "I can roll a significant distance down the taxiway blind before I can see out my windows!"

I am happy to send my redone CS767_C_31_T.dds to anyone who wishes. Providing Captain Sim don't mind my doing so.

After I doing what I explained in the post above, I do not get black windows. They are transparent and without reflections. That, I am sure, has something to do with the alpha within the file.

I think you saved it as dxt 1 with no alpha, because that would cause completely black windows, I believe. I will also check on making the alpha darker so that the windows will be virtually gone. I'll double check and get back on that when I'm finished.

Tim Capps :- "Graphics speed is just something you have to bite the bullet and ignore if you want the enjoy these airplanes.  There are some things you can do to improve, obviously, but there is a limit.  I have other airplanes I fly when I just want to not worry about graphics.  Captain Sim provides other enjoyments I think is worth the trade-off."

Spot on Tim!

It is possible to make a texture set for less powerful computers. Textures will be loaded faster although with visual quality loss.

To Add to the mystery....

I took my CS 757 for a spin to compare this behaviour and I can report that on the 757 (which shares the same panel and cockpit with the CS 767), this behaviour does not occurr - even with the reflections activated.  So, I suspect an issue with this texture in the 767.

Just bear with me for a while guys. I'm a little busy at present.

  • I have friends here for the weekend. It's Saturday 2:30pm AEST here.

  • My daughter is 5 days overdue for the birth of her baby. Her first baby & our first grandchild.  Smiley

  • I'm using Windows 7 64bit RC at present but will revert back to XP in a few hours. All my modified textures on my XP drive which is disconected.

Later tonight when my friends have gone to their place of lodging and if my daughter has still not had her baby, I will get it done.

Captain Sim 2 :- It is possible to make a texture set for less powerful computers. Textures will be loaded faster although with visual quality loss.  I might be able to check this one out! But textures and repainting are not my best areas.  Grin
