I've seen a C130 do a JATO take off at an airshow and believe me it's spectacular. I'm wondering if the added thrust will be modeled in  the sim. The real plane climbed at least at a 45 deg. angle.

I'm sure they do but it's still just a takeoff.  I'd like to see the assisted takeoff on the LC-130 model since they're only 1 of 2 units that use them anymore.

Hi,

is there actually any C130 operator that does JATO nowadays? I am only aware of "Fat Albert", but they are in a totally different line of business compared to the regular Herc units.
I suppose the whole JATO thing was dropped due to excessive risk and/or limited operational benefit.

BTW, has anyone seen (or tried in the sim) to do a maximum effort T/O? That's very impressive as well.
Any of the FEs that populate this forum care to work out a TOLD card for max effort T/O? (it is too much work for me, I have limited experience in going through performance charts...)

Yeah the New York ANG guys that do the Antarctic work still use them on the LC-130's.

This is why I want the LC-130 after the J-model.  That way we get The LC-130 and JATO.

Hello again,

Very impressive pictures!
How do these guys stop? Is it all reverse thrust? Do they have sort of "runway" established on the ice? What's a typical lenght?
Also, do they have special performance charts or do they use "steering inoperative" and brakes @ RCR 0?

Regards

Reverse thrust and the friction on the skis is what gets them stopped on ice/snow.  They usually have a make-shift snow(plowed runway) from what they've told me.  But sometimes not, and that's where the jato comes in.  It's not easy building up speed pushing through unplowed snow.  As for performance charts they're in the TO 1C-130H-1-1 with all the rest.  I'd suspect either an RCR of 05 or 0.  But then you have to figure in the RSC.  1 inch of runway contaminant is the equivalent of an RSC of 10.  There's a note that says: "For operation in loose, dry snow(snow that will drift in a 10-knot wind), enter charts with a depth of RSC equal to 1/3 actual depth.  This factor is applicable only for depths of loose, dry snow up to 3 inches."  Probably bleeds closed also.

From what I've read, if there is no RWY plowed they will do what all Bush pilots do up here in Alaska...they spend a couple touchdowns (nose wheel off the ground) plowing their own RWY.

They either use a RCR of 5 or a RSC, you aren't supposed to use both.  RSC takes precident.
