I also noticed that when on battery power with no external power, the light for the APU door does not light up but the door does open and the generator can be started.

According to the FOM, this lamp is powered by the MAIN DC BUS.
So if you are "on battery power with no external power", BUS TIE SWITCH
must be in the TIED position, which will power the MAIN DC BUS and the DOOR WARNING LIGHT.
