CIVA INS Tutorial......text or You Tube
Aug 26th, 2019 at 6:53pm
Print Post
Having searched high and low and being unsuccessful as most of what I have found is a bit dated, is there a tutorial either in text or via YouTube, for setting up and using the CIVA INS that comes with this aircraft?

I tried to set-up one from the Avsim-linked tutorial, but lost my way getting this aircraft to follow the waypoints, track, etc.

Any assistance appreciated.

Once you have it added the SimuFly Delco CIV-A INS to P3Dv4 (v1.60 I think is the one you need to use), make sure to set the NAV Source Select Switch to ONS, and have the A/P HDG switch turned on (much like what you need to do for the CS L-1011 32bit (FSX/SE/P3Dv3).

Thanks a lot, Mark. Where do I get this SimuFly Delco CIV-A-INS to add to my P3Dv4?

I found a YouTube featuring a female doing  an INS Tutorial, and did try to follow it, and thought I had managed to enter the first 9 waypoints, but even after selecting NAV and HDG, and setting FMS, the L-1011 reversed course!

Had to completely disarm the INS and revert to following the track manually through EFBv2

Please ignore, Mark. Found it.

Now to figure out how to integrate it in P3Dv4.

I'll have to look further into it.

So far, I haven't been able to get the gauges set up correctly yet (having them show up on the screen), and the documentation looks like it's the same as the docs for the 1.51version.
The gauges for v1.60 x64bit version, are named differently to what is seen in the documentation (so it shows that the documention is most likely for v1.51).

I have managed to get the Civa INS v1.60x64 to showq up in the 1011 II, but it stalls at 65 when trying to align. Other than that, it seems to work. At least it does to that point. Even loading in a flight plan in the ADEU works, so I really think I have it added correctly up to a certain point.

The INS turns on with the initialisation entry in [VCockpit01], just like it does if I add it to the bottom [Window00] (documentation says it must be there, but you must use SHIFT+1 to initialise it (nothing shows up on the screen when you this, and nothing should either)), or at the bottom of [Window03]. Even though it intialises, it still stops 65 during the alignment. I remember having this problem with the 707 Captain, but I can't remember the fix.

What also seems to happen, is one of the HDDs on my PC (I don't know which one) surges (spins up for a second or two, stops, then spins up for a second or two, stops...rinse and repeat...) when the L-1011 II with the INS is loaded into P3Dv4. Undecided

EDIT. I got past the 65 problem, by pressing the TEST button on the CDU (and the HDD spin up seems to have stopped with it, which leads me to believe it was the drive that has P3Dv4 installed on it). Also, to get it to track the route in the INS, click on the INS NAV switch to turn it on (this is the NavModeSingle switch), leave the L-1011's Nav Source Selector on VOR, and press the HDG switch on the AP, and the SimuFly CIVA INS will track the route you have entered into the INS.

Note. The setup I have used is to have the MSU, CDU, ADEU, NavSingleMode, and UpdateFlags, all in the one panel (I used [Window03] and replaced the default 2D INS panel).

Hi Mark

Need some help, please.

I set up the INS as per the tutorial; radios all set up, and course set up as per tutorial. I then take off as per tutorial; at 1000ft ASL I engage the AP., and bring the flaps up as per the IAS.

I switch the HDG on; then NAV; and finally move the VOR in the navigation panel to FMS.

Am still baffled why the aircraft does not follow the INS. What am I doing incorrectly, please?

This IS the SimuFly CIVA INS (v160x64) you're using?

Going on the assumption that your answer to my question is yes.

Once the INS is aligned and set to NAV, and you have entered the waypoint coordinates for the route, all you need to do for the L-1011 II to follow the route is this:

1. Have the NAV Source Selector set to VOR (DO NOT set it to FMS or ONS!!!)
2. Turn the HDG Mode Switch ON
3. Turn the AP on (flip either AP Switch A, or B, to the CMD position)
4. Turn the SimuFly CIVA INS's INS NAV Switch (this is the NavModeSingle gauge) ON

Doing that, the L-1011 II should follow the SimuFly CIVA INS route.

For some strange reason I can't attach an image to this Reply/Topic, so I'll upload a video on YouTube showing you what I do, just so you can see it in action.

Hi Mark

Thanks for that. No, not using the SimuFly version of the CIVA INS(v160 x 64) as I was awaiting as and when you managed to sort out the small hiccups you encountered, so resorted to using the FSX Tutorial London-Madrid. Other than the sim, it was just a matter of swapping from FSX to P3D, so the Tutorial more or less was applicable to P3Dv4.

Hi Mark

Once again, tried the same CS FSX tutorial flight, from EGLL- LEMD and tried what you suggested for the SimuFly CIVA INS but instead, tried to substitute for the default INS that comes with this aircraft, and it did not follow anything that looked like the flightplan. I had to keep changing the HDG over and over to manually follow the flightplan, as I had the aircraft going off on a track of its own mind.

In the end I just gave up. Much as I do like this aircraft, I am afraid its INS navigation system is driving me up the wall and wasting my precious time.

Or, I may go your SimuFly route. To that extent, is it just a matter of running the .exe and then copy/pasting your aircraft.cfg as above?

For the default (Captain Sim) CIVA INS

1. CIVA INS Mode Selector Knob - NAV (after it has aligned - the green READY NAV light illuminates)
2. Flight Director Switch - ON, or SYNC (I use both set to SYNC)
3. AP Switch - CMD
4. Heading Mode Switch - ON
5. NAV Source Selector - FMS

Doing the above, the L-1011 II should follow the route.

Thanks, Mark. I'll try that, and report back.

I love this aircraft and really want to get the joy of using it, as long as it can navigate itself instead of constantly monitoring the track and accordingly adjusting the HDG.

Sorry Mark, I tried you suggestion, followed it to the letter but the aircraft instead of following the PFPX-generated Flightplan, which I imported into the sim's Flight Planner and checked the route was being displayed, instead of following the 269 deg course, it rigidly stuck to course 177 deg.

When I tried to revert to VOR and chose HDG to 269 the aircraft changed course to that heading, but the minute I changed VOR to FMS, it went back to 177 degrees which is nothing like the course.

At that stage, I packed it in. I'm now at a loss to get this INS to follow a flightplan.

Something is definitely wrong there. I created a route from YMML to YSSY using PFPX, saved it as a default P3Dv4 .PLN file (YMMLYSSY-PFPX.PLN). I included a SID and STAR. After takeoff, once I switched on the HDG (which was set to the runway heading at the time), then rotated the NAV Source Selector Knob to FMS, it tracked the route no like it should.

I have tested the L-1011 II with the FD Switches set to ON (just one of them, then both), and that worked fine. I also tested with the FD Switches set to SYNC (just one of them, then both), and again that worked fine. As I said in my previous post I normally set both of the FD Switches to SYNC, but since the

I am currently doing a flight, and again I've tested with either one, or both, in the ON position, or the SYNC position, and they are working like they should.

The only reason I can think of why it isn't working for you, is that the MODE SELECTOR Knob on the INS is either not set to NAV, or it was not set to NAV before it was aligned. Undecided

EDIT: Reading the manual, I found something else that might be a problem. The AUTO/MAN Switch. I always have this set to AUTO, not MAN.

The manual's description:

14. AUTO/MAN Switch

Selects automatic leg switching by INS (AUTO) or manual leg switching bythe pilot (MAN).

Maybe you have it on MAN?
