SOLVED!!!.....UPDATE UPDATE757... 727 dropping FPS

I wasn't sure what forum to post in since I'm having the exact same problem with two different planes.

Since upgrading to Win 8 and a new computer I've been having issues with the 757 and 727.

I can start off a flight no problems locked at 30FPS, however as time goes by...maybe 15-20 minutes the frames will gradually get slower and slower until im running about ~7 or so.

Reloading plane and scenery does not help, however if I save the flight, I can exit and restart FSX right back at 30FPS for another half hour or so.

I own multiple CS products and so far the 707, 737, and 767 seem to run okay.  (I have 777 too but have never made it off the ground with it)

Other payware aircraft, (PM-DG, Cool-sky, Maddog) also run locked at 30fps no problem.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the 727 and 757 multiple times with no change.

I have most of the various FSX tweaks enabled with no help.

I have dumbed down the graphics setting to extremely stupid levels with no change.  (planes look like 8-bit Mario brothers)

Ihave disabled virtual cabin on the 757  (not possible on 727) with no change.

I have disabled high resolution VC with no change.

Is there something specific about the 757 and 727 that might cause a memory leak where other CS planes are fine?

Thanks in advance. Wink

Although I have Win8.1 Pro 64bit, my computer specs are similar (i7 @3.5GHz, GTX770 and 16GB RAM), I have not had this happen to me. However,
1) I run FSX in Windowed Mode all the time!
2) I have the frame rate set to Unlimited, and
3) FSX is always run using the Run this program as an administrator.

You could try that to see if it helps with your problem. Be aware that it takes a while to get used to FSX in Windowed Mode. Wink

NOTE. I don't like Win 8/8.1, so I mostly use FSX in Win7 Professional 64bit, but that's my opinion.  Undecided

Okay, I have win 8.1 64bit as well.

I do run FSX in admin mode, but I havent tried windowd mode or setting frames to unlimited.   (I usually limit to 30)

Unfortunately its not a problem that shows up instantly, so it'll be a few days before I have time to test this out.

Thanks for hint....unfortunately going back to win 7 isn't an easy option at present.

Ill report in the meantime.
Cool

Seeing as you have  16GB of RAM, I assumed you were running Windows 8 (or Windows 8.1) 64bit, otherwise there is no point in having more than 4GB RAM. Wink

I'm not saying that you should go back to Windows 7, I'm just saying that I prefer it.
My computer is a dual boot system with Windows 7 Professional 64bit and Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, so I can boot to either operating system whenever I like. Wink

Okay, here is the flight report.

Standard ~2 hour flight KMIA-KATL from cold and dark to shutdown t gates

FSX is run in windowed mode with care added to ensure it does not touch menu bar.

Frame rates are set to UNLIMITED.

Test aircraft is the 727 (yes Im aware of what forum this is, but the problems I have with 757 is pretty much similar.)

In general windowed performance is pretty awful.
Roughly 10-15 FPS LESS than fullscreen.

To be honest about halfway through the flight I give up on windowed and switch back to normal.

During the two hour flight I found it necessary to save and restart FSX 3 times, each time able to resume from saved spot.

Detailed below:

START FSX

Start up Procedures

Exterior FPS~70-80
VC FPS~20-25

TAXI to RUNWAY

Exterior FPS ~30-40
VC FPS~ 5-14

SAVE AND RESTART #1

Continue taxi and climbout from Miami

Exterior FPS~ 50-70
VC FPS~ 20-35

LEVEL OFF

Exterior FPS ~40-50
VC FPS ~15-20

20 Minutes into Cruise
Exterior FPS~15
VC FPS~7-10

SAVE AND RESTART #2
ALSO SWITCH TO FULLSCREEN HERE

Continue Cruise

Exterior FPS~80-110
VC FPS~40-60

Top of decent about an hour later

Exterior FPS~40-50
VC FPS~10-15

RESTART #3 HERE.

Decent continues

Exterior FPS ~80-100
VC FPS~40-50

Landing

Exterior FPS ~40-50
VC FPS~18-25

By the time I taxi and reach the gate
Exterior FPS ~20-28
VC FPS ~13-19

If the frames only dropped around airports and such I'd say its just graphics settings, but the drop slowly progresses seemingly no matter what is going on onscreen.

I have repeated the exact flight twice for comparison (only this time FULLSCREEN all the way), with pretty much similar results.

I then flew the flight a third time in the 707 instead..

Exterior FPS on average 70-90
VC FPS on average 40-50

any ideas would be helpful. Huh

I have no idea why the frame rate is dropping. What drivers are you using for the GTX 770? I'm using the 340.52 WHQL drivers (I'm not using the 340.52 drivers because of the problems they cause me in P3Dv2.2 (I don't know if this is still a problem for v2.3 yet).

I get much higher frame rates in Windowed mode than I do in full screen mode, but unlike you, I just maximize the window, I do not stretch it in all 4 directions, nor do I make sure it doesn't touch the task bar.  My screen resolution is only 1920x1080 (24" Acer HDMI LCD Monitor). Although my frame rates fluctuate during a flight (always lower at the departing and arrival airports), they do not gradually drop over the length of a flight. I do not think I have ever used FSX in Full Screen mode in Win 8.1 64bit, so I will have to do a test to see if it performs better.

I haven't flown a flight, in the CS727, that was longer than 2 hours in a long time, but overall, its performance is generally better than the 757, or any of the latest Captain Sim FSX releases (767, 707, 737, 777 L-1011). I do not have this problem with any Captain Sim addons for FSX.

I had been using an earlier driver set initially, but I have since upgraded to 340.52 with no noticeable change.

Honestly at this point its more of an irritating problem then a real game killer, so long as I save and reload at least 3 times a flight or thereabouts.

Fortunately the ACARs system for my Virtual Airline allows me to do this in order to keep my hours straight and honest Cool

(On that note...yes I have tried flying with nothing running in background as well)

I'm a bit confused on the fullscreen thing seeing as I have read in multiple places that windowed mode is a FPS killer, especially if it interacts with menu bar.

I think eventually what I'm going to have to do is see if I can partition my drive to run Win 7 again and see if that makes a difference.

Yay for wasted $$$$ buying the OS again. Undecided

I read something written by someone claiming that running FSX in Windowed Mode would achieve better frame rates, so I tried it out and found it to be true and stuck with it ever since. If I press CTRL+ENTER and go into Full Screen Mode, the frame rates drop straight away, so it's back to Windowed Mode every time.

Windowed Mode also allows me to switch to and from other tasks while doing long haul flights without having to press CTRL+ENTER twice to get rid of the blacked out FSX screen that always happens when I switch tasks in Full Screen Mode. Undecided

Very strange indeed! Cheesy

UPDATE UPDATE!!

I think I may have traced down the issue.

I noticed while flying along with steadily dropping fps, that when I hit Q to mute the sim, my fps jumped back up to 30 (fixed).

Tried this multiple times with similar results leading me to think that there is something about the sound files for the 727 and 757 that my computer does not like.

In a test flight with the 727 sound replaced with the 707 files I had absolutely no drop in fps.  I am assuming the same goes for 757 as well.

Im going to have to investigate my sound card and drivers, etc, but for now I am thrilled to have discovered the problem and being able to fly uninterrupted by using some modified sound files.

Hope this helps someone else. Grin

I am having the exact same problem with mine start at the gate all is well getting about 30-40fps but soon after taxing and getting to runway dropped to about 20fps. when i came into land i was getting 7-8fps maxing out at 10fps.

Do you know where i can get the sound files needed and how to fix it like you did, are you able to post how you did it.

Look forward to hearing from you.
