irs selectors problem

I almost always start all my flights in cold and dark.
First turn on the battery then the i turn on the left fuel pumps for the apu. So when the apu is running i turn the irs selectors to align then after all 3 are aligned I switch it to nav. Maybe a minute later they start to flash align all at the same time. Is their a fix or my error?

Do not turn them to ALIGN! Turn them directly to NAV and they will align and work fine.

From the ‘757 Captain’ FLIGHT MANUAL Part II – Aircraft Systems (cs757_manual2.pd) page 12:

IRS Alignment

An IRS must be aligned before it can enter NAV mode. Rotating the IRS mode selector from OFF to NAV begins
the IRS alignment.
The IRS performs a short power test, during which the ON DC light illuminates. When the ON
DC extinguishes the ALIGN light illuminates. Alignment requires approximately 30 seconds, time frame
intentionally set for quick alignment.

Also, in RW you should not move the plane during alignment.
Don't forget to enter your position in the CDU under POS INIT.

Why? The way I learnt it was that you move all three switches to ALIGN, then wait until the ALIGN light starts to flash, enter IRS position in FMC and then move switches to NAV. Are you telling me that I've been doing it wrong this whole time?  Undecided

In the beginning I turned them from OFF to ALIGN, then NAV, but it didn't always work. So after reading about moving them from OFF to NAV to align them, I do it that way now.

So if it works for you to move them from OFF to ALIGN, then NAV, then that's okay to do.
