IRS and MCDU aiborn alignment

Is it possible to enable Captain SIM 757  IRS and MCU to align while airborn. Not really cheating just want to make sure I'm controlling everything properly. I have used the tutorial to enable the GPS as described on the forum. I have used a short flight with the 737 model made by another producer ~successfully on this path.
I like to use the default FSX' Friday Harbour' location and test between there and Vancover Intl. Very short but hones my ILS skills very quickly instead of a  1hour or 2 hour long flight which can end in disaster - very time consuming. I do abide by normal procedures but it helps this 63 year old 'rookie'. Thanks for any input Smiley

I have a program called FS Instant Approach PRO ($24.95 US), which is really handy for setting up and practicing approaches. No need to even take off!

You start FSX, set the aircraft up at the airport you want to practice approaches at, then use FS Instant Approach to position the aircraft near the airport for an approach. All sorts of settings allows you to add numerous factors to the approach.

You  can download the Demo and try it out. The limitations on the demo are:

Quote:
The demo version of FS Instant Approach PRO contains all of the features listed on the features page, except for the following limitation:

  • Pilot can perform Instant Approaches to runways at Chicago (KORD) or Green Bay (KGRB) only
  • Pilot cannot submit flight maps to the FS Instant Approach web site

In answer to your question about aligning the IRS in flight, I don't think you can do it. I don't remember ever trying it though. Sad

Many thanks Markoz. I have that programme FS Instant Approach but have difficulty with this aircraft I presume its because I need to activate the autopilot. Which again needs IRS and MCU aligning. I find it useful for all manner of other aircraft. But nevertheless a quick and appreciated reply. You can see what I am trying to achieve Wink

I set my 767-300 up on the runway, then start FS Approach Pro (worked on the earlier FS Approach too). Then I set up the approach in FS Approach Pro and press Connect. The 767 is where I want it, but it does require a rapid succession of buttons (even more if the A/P isn't already turned ON), but by the time it settles in for the approach, which allows me to check the IRS co-ordinates, I find that they match the actual location of the 767-300. The landing is usually very good if I haven't set the crosswinds too strong.

My 737 behaves like your last reply{albeit its a different product - 737 PIC)what I do is pause and set the perameters even look at fsx map to check altitude / speed / heading. So it settles quicker LOL.
Not sure but I think I need autopilot on 757 to hold altitude ~ speed control operates ok. Right click on heading.

Firstly. Let me correct my previous reply. I don't know why I was thinking 767-300, but I was. Embarrassed
I set my 757-200 up on the runway, then start FS Approach Pro (worked on the earlier FS Approach too). Then I set up the approach in FS Approach Pro and press Connect. The 757 is where I want it, but it does require a rapid succession of buttons (even more if the A/P isn't already turned ON), but by the time it settles in for the approach, which allows me to check the IRS co-ordinates, I find that they match the actual location of the 757-200. The landing is usually very good if I haven't set the crosswinds too strong.

And here is a screenshot showing the alignment of the IRS. The IRS matches the actual locatiuon of the plane (Lined up to land at YMML on runway ILS 16).

This is how the IRS looked once FS Approach Pro put it where I asked it to, AND I had finished sorting out the A/P.

I did not have to realign the IRS!

One other thing I forgot to mention. I always enter the Gross Weight into Approach page on the CDU. This gives me a VAPP for the plane so I have an accurate setup for landing.

Top Man !! I've read a few of your articles/replies. You've answered all my questions.Liked the addition of the GPS to the semicons at the side of the screen using the immovable yoke button that doesn't turn with plane positions- good move !! Smiley Don't really know why it was there in the first place Shocked
