Just an amber heading bug instead of white would work well for me. I'm surprised it's white on the real gauge.

The difficult part of it is that it looks like it is set to the heading you want, but you can be off by a degree without seeing it. This is where the ToolTip would come in very handy. Just move the mouse pointer over the heading select knob, and the heading setting pops up. Easy.

I never need the heading to be more precise than with the HDG bug. You make occasional adjustments anyway, to stay on the VOR radial. Or if ATC is giving you approach or departure vectors, you are not going to be on any single vector long enough that you would need more precision than the bug.
