Flaps handle and exterior flap view

Print Post
Hello all,
Just purchased the Captain Sim B-52, so this question may already have been discussed somewhere previously in the history of this product.  If so, would someone tell me where the fix is?
Here's my problem.
When I use my CH Products Quad Throttle (Button, not axis) to lower the flaps, in the VC, the flap handle goes down one increment per button push, but the flaps go from full up to full down on a single button press on the exterior model.  Bascially there is no incremental flap settings showing on the exterior model, even though the VC switch goes up and down incrementally.  The MSFX (FSX) setting are set to extend the flaps incrementally up or down, and this same setting works for all other aircraft in my hanger.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Dean

Hi Dean

Lowering the flaps to the first position, 11%, is a large movement (which doesn't seem like it really should be), from then on down to 100%, they are very small movements of the flaps. I don't know whether this is the way they operate in real life, so only the guys who flew them can answer that. Maybe you are not seeing those smaller movements easily enough. Get in as close as you can to the flaps (using an external Aircraft view), use your switch to see if they are moving. The more flaps you use, more power is required to hold your airspeed, so the aircraft.cfg flap information is creating the desired affect.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys,

In real life, the flaps control lever provides UP--OFF--DN position with detents at UP, DN positions. Flaps are positioned and used in the full up position or full down position with no intermediate position. Very simple, you just have to respect Vfe, Vfo.

Thanks

Hi Rick.

Thank you for the info on the flaps.

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. You put the flap lever to the DN position and leave it there and the flaps lowered completely? There is in-between setting (you can't stop the flaps anywhere between UP and DOWN, because the is no detent in the OFF position)?

Hi Mark,

You wrote "You put the flap lever to the DN position and leave it there and the flaps lowered completely?" That's right.

Understanding how the flap control works on a real B-52H helps us to use our vitual B-52H properly.
So the B-52H flight manual says"AN OFF POSITION IS LOCATED ON EITHER SIDE OF A SPRING-LOADED LATCH-TYPE STOP WHICH IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DETENT QUADRANT. DEPRESSING THE LATCH TOWARD THE FLAP LEVER ALLOWS THE FLAP LEVER TO BE MOVED FROM OFF POSITION ON EITHER SIDE OF THE LATCH TO THE OPPOSITE DETENT".
Flaps are extended/retracted with the use of 2 coupled electric drive motors. The flaps extend or retract fully in approximately 60 seconds. So when the pilot wish to extend the flaps, he moves the lever from the OFF position directly to the DN position. Doing this will energize the flap electrical drive motors. 60 seconds later, the flaps will be in the down position. The lever is left at the DN position, limit switches will deenergize the electrical circuits.

There is no intermediate detents (positive in-between settings) on the flap lever quadrant but the pilot can place the flap in an intermediate position if he brings back the flap lever to the OFF position, doing this will stop the retraction/extension motion. The manual says "WHEN THE LEVER IS IN THE OFF POSITION, THE CIRCUITS ARE DEENERGIZED AND THE WING FLAP ARE HELD IN THEIR LAST POSITION". Like I mentioned previously, no intermediate flap positions are needed or used during take-off, approach and landing.

Mark, if I'm not clear, do not hesitate to reply to this

Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick.

Thank you for that explanation. I'm pretty sure I understand what you are saying.

So I made a change to the B-52 o put it more in line with reality. I changed the [flaps.0] entry from this:

[flaps.0]
type             = 1
span-outboard    = 0.8
extending-time   = 60
flaps-position.0 = 0
flaps-position.1 = 10
flaps-position.2 = 20
flaps-position.3 = 29
flaps-position.4 = 30
flaps-position.5 = 31
flaps-position.6 = 32
flaps-position.7 = 33
flaps-position.8 = 34
flaps-position.9 = 35

damaging-speed   = 250
blowout-speed    = 270
lift_scalar = 1.0
drag_scalar = 1.0
pitch_scalar= 1.0
system_type = 1                                         //Hydraulic

To this:

[flaps.0]
type             = 1
span-outboard    = 0.8
extending-time   = 60
flaps-position.0 = 0
flaps-position.1 = 35

damaging-speed   = 250
blowout-speed    = 270
lift_scalar = 1.0
drag_scalar = 1.0
pitch_scalar= 1.0
system_type = 1                                         //Hydraulic

So now the flaps have only two settings. Fully UP (0%) or fully DOWN (100%). Smiley

Hey, that's a good idea Mark, I'll change the flaps parameters as you did.

Thanks

Hi Rick.

It's all about the realism, so I changed the settings to see if they worked. They worked, so they stay. I think that quite a few might want to do that too, including Dean, the original poster. Wink

To Mark and Rick,

Thanks so much for the help.  Made the modification supplied and things are much better.

Thanks again.
