Just install CIVA INS into FSX (FSX\Civa).

I can't help you with a panel.cfg as I'm not using the INS in the 727.

Sorry, but their instructions are a mess

How about those? http://www.captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1286031420
It's a link from this thread, which sums up all common mods and tweaks on the 727. http://www.captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1319547655

But I have to warn you. The installation of the thing is the easier part of the game, understanding the operation takes way more effort and you will have to read some more to get into it.  Undecided
As you may have guessed, there already is a thread which collects all INS operation topics and questions. So keep that one in mind when looking for answers.  Wink http://www.captainsim.org/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1285100008

Hi:

I would like to ask you if you think if CIVA INS is worth to be installed in a short-medium hauler as B727 is. I'm flying 707 from a long year now, and the 727 more recently. Let me explain my question.

The need of an inertial system arised when crossing long distances over the water with no VOR NDB or whatever radio stations. Although LORAN stations where usefull, AFAIK signal was not allways available. So INS was usefull for the 707 (although a little unaccurate, though risky as veterans may remeber for KAL flights over USSR border).
But...Was it so usefull for a plane overflying the continent full of navaids?

Today we've got restrictions over Europe, and non RNAV certified ac can not fly above FL150, but these restrictions are quite recent (10-12 years) so If a European airline would like to upgrade a B727 Im sure they would get GPS-FMC on board (for those who like extreme ARAIG).

What do you think about this? Perhaps Lou can tell us something.

I think it's difficult to stick to any rw guidelines while operating in the sim regime. So while rw airlines may upgrade their planes to some FMC for obvious reasons (they don't fly planes for the fun of it), the sim folks don't have to do this and can pick whatever they want to. As long as it works out.

You can run close to the rw, but you don't have to. That's the beauty of the sim. First of all, it's about the fun of it, so you can fly like in the times the 727 was new or you can try to get into modern things and work around some instrument quirks for example.

I doubt that many rw airlines operate a B377, a 707 (few are left) or Concorde these days, but I'm pretty happy to be able to driving those things in the sim, with some not too fancy equipment.

So while I would like to see a well done 727 retrofit with a sort of FMC, I may remind the folks about the loss of enjoyable workload that comes with it. As it shows, that sim fanciness often comes with another loss, the one on the basic 'how does this thing actually work' aspect.
That's a thing happening because the sim allows you to learn backwards, so quite some of us may have flown fancy equipped birds first and then came back to the steamliners, asking how they actually operated.

Each to his own of course, so maybe somebody adds some FMC-like stuff to the sim 727. This would give you VOR / ADF, cheated FSX GPS, the INS and then some fourth option. Freedom of choice.  Smiley

INS useful if you crossing Australia. huge region around YBAS dont have any beacons. if you planning to use Radio nav only, then you'll have to make a big detours instead of straight route. if you plan strait beacon to beacon route, then you'll get leg lengths about 300 nm between NDB (no VORs there). So you gotta arrive within 60nm of NDB. Add changing winds and you can be badly offcourse, and waste a lot of fuel.  IFR and ground control helps. INS very handy in this situation. Same for Africa. Plus, with INS you can go Australia to New Zealand and oceania routes. They not long, but over sea.
I dont use INS on 727, and i fly over desert, and thats hard. im thinking to get one for AU-NZ routes.

Up, please!

I'm new to the CS 727. I installed the INS CIVA, everything is working well except that after 15 minutes, the battery light of my INS start to illuminate and then a few minutes after the INS shut down...

I use the infinite battery of FSUIPC, I also added the electric_always_available=1
in the electrical section of the aircraft.cfg but no matter what my battery still die....

Is there a way to solve that problem?

Thanks

Me too >>
Just installed dual CIVA in CS Captain (FSX) B727-100.
It aligned and worked perfectly for about 3 waypoints
into the flight and then suddenly quit (shut off). The yellow battery
light on the CDUs appeared when I started to taxi and would go out
when power was reduced and or brakes applied.  After takeoff
this light stayed on constantly until about 3 waypoints (30nm)
and then the CDUs' red warning lights came on and very shortly
thereafter the CIVA system shut down. Anyone have any
idea what I may have missed?
FYI, I use FSUIPC payware with infinite battery enabled. Also double
checked the generator switches and power switch settings.  Even tried
turning the APU back on and giving it the load (with appropriate power
switch settings).  Recycled the main battery switch (on engineers panel).
Nothing I tried made the yellow CDU battery light even blink.
Haven't tried everything mentioned early in this thread.  Especially
should try starting up default Cessna, etc. first.  I'll follow up later
but in meantime I'm open for any tips.  I love the CIVA system >
used it with great success for several years with the (FS9) RFP B742.
Also trained on this system and worked on it for several years
in late 1960's as installed in the US Navy's SH-3D Helo.
I tried to "insert" a screen cap for illustration but the insert
function here doesn't appear to work for me.
Thank you,
Ken

Tonight I tried starting from a fresh startup with the default Cessna
and then turning off Cessna fuel and battery prior to selecting the
B721.  Also cycled the battery switch twice as recommended in this
forum.  I still got the dreaded battery lights and eventual failure
of the CIVA.  Very frustrating because while the CIVA is functioning,
it does everything it's supposed to do and perfectly.  Just can't
seem to get the 727's power connected to it.  Even tried to trick
the CIVA after takeoff by supplying power to the aircraft with the
APU and applying the emergency brake (in flight ~Smiley  but those
yellow battery lights stayed on.
Still hoping that someone who actually has succeeded in using
the CIVA with the CS727 will offer a TS tip or a solution.
Best to all,
Ken

To INSSUck,
There should be a very small INS Switch panel (in my setup it's actually
attached to the twin CDU popup).  After engaging the auto pilot
with the Aileron and Elevator paddle switches and toggling Heading
mode ON (on the AP panel),  it is then necessary to toggle one of the
INS switches (small INS switch panel)  to the ON position. I apologize
if you are already aware of this,  but we can't make assumptions
here.
My setup works great except it won't stay powered ON   Cry
Best regards,
Ken

To all,
Below is a procedure I've developed for successful use of the fine
CIVA system with the Captain Sim B727.

Link to the textfile for download >>
https://www.dropbox.com/s/yl2bmjxf58k0t6l/CIVA_CS%20B727_startup.zip

CS B727 Captain (for FSX) with Delco Carousel INS installed,  Startup Procedure >

Purpose >
Eliminate the CDU constant (yellow) battery light and subsequent CIVA system
shutdown,  to enable normal CIVA INS operation in the Captain Sim B727

Developed using the following environment  >
Win7-64, FSX Acceleration, FSUIPC (latest version), Captain Sim B727-100, CIVA
Ver 1.51 Dual Redundant setup,  CIVA-CS_B727-100.zip (readily available CS721
panel.cfg file{slightly modified} with additional texture files).

Those of you who have learned the Delco Carousel Inertial Navigation System (CIVA )
will likely find this writing somewhat "long-winded".  Those of you who haven't had much
exposure to the Delco Carousel CIVA will likely have some questions.

The checklist >
1.  Delete ..Flight Simulator X\CIVA\*.isd file( just to be safe) prior to every flight >> a good
and harmless safety measure.  NOTE: To be effective, this step must be accomplished
before loading the B727 in the sim.
2.  Start FSX
3.  Load Default Flight (I use Cessna 172)
NOTE: To be safe, use Keys and Keyboard combinations only (not the mouse) to
    accomplish the following :
     a. Shutdown engine (Ctrl + Shf + F1 > or your custom key assignments )
NOTE: If you leave the red Mixture Knob in the (pulled) out position,  then when
the B727 is loaded, the Engine Start Levers on the Throttle Pedestal will be in
the correct (closed / lowered) position.
     b. Switch off battery and alternator (Shf + M)   IMPORTANT: Leave the Cessna's
         avionics switch ON.
     c. Other Cessna switches OFF except Magneto switch (optional) and Avionics
         switch (Important)
4.  Select / load a CS B727 that has CIVA properly installed
5.  Move the B727 to world location of choice
6.  Set parking brake
7.  Set payload, fuel, time, date, etc.
8.  Turn on INS self power by setting all MSU mode switches to "STBY"  (Leave the
APU and aircraft battery switch OFF)
9.  Perform normal CIVA preflight checks and alignment >>  set present position,
waypoint entrys, distance checks, etc (ADEU works too, for those who use *.AWC
    files to enter waypoints)
10. While INS is aligning > preset the cockpit gauges and switches (that can be preset
with aircraft power OFF) as necessary for the flight, and make / ensure the following
     settings on Engineer's Panel:
     a. Electrical system battery switch = OFF
     b. Essential Power switch = Gen 2
     c. Set / Ensure all 9 main generator toggle switches centered and their associated
         indicator lights off
11.When green ready lights appear on the MSUs (APIs = 5 or less on CDU), set their
mode switches to"NAV".   WARNING: Do not forget this step >> if this step is not
accomplished before the aircraft pushes back / taxis then the INS alignment will
invalidated,  and the aircraft will need to be stopped (parking brake set) and the
    alignment restarted ~Smiley
12.Toggle the B727 electrical system battery switch (upper engineer's panel)  2 (TWO)
    times (Shf + M)
13.Start the APU > IMPORTANT: DO NOT toggle the APU Generator switch. Use the
APU AIR ONLY (for Engine start).
Info: The battery will power all radios and other necessary aircraft systems during
engine start (unrealistic > but it gets better ~)
14.Start engines (my order of start is 2, 3, 1)
15.Now, "it gets better" >> VERY IMPORTANT: Do not touch (or breath on) the 9 main
generator toggle switches on the Engineer's Panel (and hope that all 9 indicator
lights remain extinguished).  Aircraft systems are now powered by the #2 Engine
    Generator (or FM ~Smiley
16.Shut down the APU
17.After Pushback,  when brakes are released and taxi power is applied, if you don't
see the dreaded CDU yellow battery caution light, then all should be well.

The autopilot worked well for me in Heading mode, however on the first flight (with "ALT
HOLD" not engaged) the aircraft elevator trim wheel (on throttle quadrant) wanted to
remain in center (neutral) position and the nice Pitch feature of the yoke was locked (inop),
which made the climb to cruising altitude more interesting than desired.  If you experience
this, then I recommend temporarily toggle off the INS and disengage the auto pilot (just for
the altitude changes).  When at desired altitude switch the AP and INS back on.
As an alternative to the above, you can try using the Turn and Pitch Controller knob on the
Auto Pilot panel for pitch adjustments.  This has worked well for me lately.
AP "ALT HOLD" mode works fine, and INS connects to the AP with no issues when
AP "HEADING SEL" mode is engaged.
Also would like to mention that on my last two flights INS Dual DME Updating fiunctioned
perfectly.  I have read several comments stating that this feature was not working,  so this
was a very pleasant surprise.

I successfully tested this procedure five times before I considered sharing it.
Disclaimer: I can't guarantee that this will work as well for everyone as it did here. As most
of you may know, the very fine "CS B727 Captain" software and very fine Simufly CIVA INS
were never actually design to work together,  and therefore I found it necessary to "adjust"
some of the CS B727 operating procedures (a few of them obvious as noted above) to coax
them to get along together.  If it seems that I missed a detail or two (or three) well it's certainly
possible.  It's early,  so please consider this a "work in progress".  I'm always open to tips
and suggestions for improvement and of course questions.  I'll update this "essay" as the
adventure continues, if warranted.
Best to all,
Ken Boardman

Thanks Ken. You will need to upload the text and/or Zip file to another location like FlightSim.com, AVSIM or even DropBox (I use Dropbox at the moment), and post the link in your post/reply.

Here are two examples of how to use the Hyperlink to share it:

Code
Select All
[url]https://www.dropbox.com/s/qtdza9oxjxkob8k/727-200_qantas.zip[/url]

and it looks like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qtdza9oxjxkob8k/727-200_qantas.zip

OR

Code
Select All
[url=https://www.dropbox.com/s/qtdza9oxjxkob8k/727-200_qantas.zip]727-200 QANTAS livery[/url]

and it looks like this: 727-200 QANTAS livery

Clicking on either Hyperlink will get you the 727-200_qantas.zip in my Dropbox.

Edited:
I forgot to thank you for the instruction on how to do it. I will be sure to do it soon to see if I get better results than I got last time. Thank You. Wink

Hi Mark,
Thank you for the tip about Dropbox.  I opened an "account" there
and placed a link to my text file in my post (above).  Dropbox
appears to give more free storage space than many other
similar services.  Another file storage service I was considering
only offered 1/2 the space (only 1gb) and charged $12 / month
for upgraded (additional) storage space, while Dropbox charges
for same amount of additional storage space > $9.
If you have the necessary software and feel inclined to test
the CS B727 + CIVA procedure, let me know how it goes so
I can change stuff that can perhaps make it more complete
and / or easier to use.
Best regards,
Ken

Sorry to bring up an old thread. My PC died and have done a reinstall of updated CS 727
have been reading this and other forums all day prior to this post

The new 727 comes with INS - but darned if I can work out how to get it going. (turning on, entering pos,
waypoints etc etc etc - but actually getting it to navigate ??)

I use CIVA INS in 707 and it works fine.

I have put the CIVA INS now in my 727 - all waypoints load no problem, align ok - but i can not turn the heading switch on.
Have tried everything ...

Am I missing the point
Does the INS that comes with 727 now actually work ? I cant find any documentation on it.

Thanks
Shane
