	Quick little question: Why are there "jump seats" in airliner cockpits? Who sits there? Thanks boeing247

	It's me, don't even think about sitting there. � But I don't think that there's a general rule for that seat. VIPs, company guys, check pilots, girlfriends, presidents, only one at a time though. After 2001 times will have reduced the appearances there I guess.

	Well the jump seat can be used for two things: 1. If a pilot has to get a transfer from where he lives to the hub he (or she) could ride in the jump seat for the flight. (Example say a pilot lives near KSFO, but his hub is in KJFK, he could ride in the jump seat on a KSFO-KJFK flight and the fly his routes (I'm almost positive lou has done something similar to this quite a few times)) 2. If a 757 or 767 or most other planes are flying a long routes there will often be another F/O or Captain in the jump seat so the pilots can switch out as they get tired mid-flight.

	Well the jump seat is present for many purposes. In the Boeing B-17, there was no dedicated panel or station for the flight engineer, and a seat was able to easily sotre, and pop up when he was needed to lean the engines. In modern jets, the jumpseat is also an extra seat in the cockpit, where, in instances of a long-haul flight, the extra pilot can sit and help with checklists before flight. The jumpseat is also a place for an extra pilot to sit, in the event that there is the need for navigational assistance, or technical assistance. The jumpseat was used in the instance of United Flight 232, when a DC-10 pilot riding in first class, was brought into the cockpit to assist the two pilots manuevre the aircraft, when all controls but throttles and slight elevator trim had been lost (the FE was busy with other stuff). Jumpseats are used today also for commuting pilots, when there are no more seats in the main cabin, a pilot from that airline, or another, can be seated in the cockpit, whether he is commuting, or in some instances, a pilot for that airline can personally travel and sit in the jumpseat.

	Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding...Sonoace Has the correct answer!!! � It's primary reason is so the FAA can give the pilot a checkride. Some planes/airlines have only one jump seat, others have two. Although restricted in the USA to certain people, and much further restricted after 911, it remains available to most active pilots or others who appear on the individual airline approved list...which is of course approved by the FAA. � In other countries, the jump seat was left up to the Captain's discretion as to who could sit there. It was sometime used as a reward to certain loyal passengers. At TWA for instance, all our planes - except the DC-9/MD80 had two jump seats. Lou

	The second jumpseat was removed from TWA's 757s, once Delta got their load of them

Lou Well, all of Delta's 757s were ordered with a single jumpseat, and since the cockpit doesn't have as much space, it was uncomfortable I guess, to have two pilots in the cockpit jumpseats. They only needed one, but I dunno, only widebodies have two jumpseats now.

I remember my Dad told it to me a while ago, and It's for the check-airmen.

	Cabin jumpseats are for the flight attendants during takeoff, turbulence and landing.
