Other than the radar altimeter... there is no altitude alert that I know of, unless you can add it to the panel.

Thanks, Lou----

On page 19 of manual 2 the description of the Electric Altimeter (L14) describes the alerter.???

(I tried to include a picture in the prior post but it didn't take)

When you flew the 707 did you rely just on memory for the target altitude?

Hi Bruce.

The only altitude alert type of thing, that I know of, is the little yellow light that flashes when you get close to decision height on the RADIO ALTIMETER.

Thanks, Mark. But I wonder why the description of an alerter on page 14 of manual 2 when detailing the Electric Altimeter (L14)???
_________

Another question ---- when you and Lou add pictures of gauges with the colored circles and squares with arrows for highlighting features what program or tool is that??

I see what you mean about the Altitude Alerter. I think I know how that works, but I have to finish my current flight in another aircraft before I can test my theory. Once I have, I let you know if it works or not.

For editing my images, I use mspaint.exe (Paint) in Windows 7, which is a massive improvement over Paint in Windows XP. I quite often use Windows Snipping tool on the screen to copy an area of the screen I am interested in using, then I paste it into Paint and do not too fancy things to it. I'll bet that Lou uses something better than Paint to edit his images!

I have looked and looked at that gauge, but other than moving the yellow pointer around (which I don't see the purpose of) and adjusting the barometer setting there is no way to set a target altitude and there is no sound.

Okay, I use XP Paint quite a bit (don't have Windows 7) and it doesn't seem to have that function.

One last thing--- I can't post images. I believe I have been denied that privilege for some reason, although I have never been told why. I have been looking for a way to pm the admin (is that Tanya?) but can't figure that out either. Any suggestions?

Thanks, Mark.

Here is how I thought it worked, but I was wrong. I thought that he little yellow triangle would signify the height by the amount of times it rotated. This would have meant that it needed to rotated around the dial 10 times for 10,000 feet. It is so slow that I wouldn't use it if that had turned out to be how it worked.

I thought it might have worked that way because in some other 3rd party add-on aircraft I have, it has something simmilar to that that spins around the dial at the rate of once for every one thousand feet of altitude I enter in the Altitude Hold of the A/P. As I said, I was wrong. Sad

To post an image, there are two ways.
1) You browse for an image, no larger than 200KB, by clicking on the BROWSE button (to browse for an image on your computer and upload it) below the Smilies below were you type your posts.
2) You join Imageshack or Photobucket (or anywhere) that allows you to upload photos/images. To place an image in the post from them you need a link to where the photo/image is located on the web. Like this:
Code
Select All
[img]http://www.captainsim.com/user/dl/x707/x701captain.jpg[/img]

which results in this:

Hope this helps.

Bruce,

I use a number of different graphic programs. I have CorelDraw 12 to do fancy stuff, I also have a free program called Paint.NET ver 3.5.8.
I like Paint.NET because it does a pretty good job of screen captures and then I can change size, and doctor the picture for color or brightness and sharpness. I also have the ones Mark uses, but I use Imageshack to up-load the pictures to the forum.

This was all we had in the dark ages. This little mechanical yellow triangle was set by rotating the small knob and setting in a minder altitude. In the image below, I have set in 200 feet in both the baro altimeter and the radar altimeter. The baro has no warning at all, just the little yellow triangle. The radar altimeter has a small amber light which comes on as the plane passes through the altitude. Some of the radar altimeters had a rising tone which gave you a little warning as you approached the selected altitude. As you reached the altitude the tone abruptly stopped. There was one on the L-1011 that sounded like a ping pong ball as you neared the selected altitude.

On takeoff in the 707, you would set 800 feet AGL in the altimeter. This was the altitude you would level off at and clean-up in the event of an engine failure.

Mark --

What Lou just posted is all there is, I guess. I can see some practical application for the Radar Altimeter within a couple thousand feet AGL, but the other one doesn't seem very useful. The one in the 727 was a major leap forward!

I have tried both of the forum methods of posting pics and I always get a message that for security reasons I have to re-select the pic. When I do re-select it. I get this symbol, but no picture is uploaded.

Lou, thanks for the explanation and the tips for paint.net etc. Will look into that.

Hah! Lou--- That's a great picture--- I'm going to save it!

I think it may have been our go-around with the Manhattan Approach thing way back that got my picture posting privilege revoked. Or maybe I posted a picture of some non CS airplane. (been reading the rules)

You know, I believe it IS amber night here tonight. Last night it was Vodka Martinis!  Smiley
