My First Flight in the 707

I took off from STL and headed north. I was just trying to figure out the auto pilot--- not really going anywhere in particular. About 170 miles from MKE I decided to file an IFR plan to MKE. ATC vectored me to 040 to intercept the ILS for 1L. Almost too late I figured out, by watching the GPS - heh, heh, that 040 was not going to get the job done, so I disengaged the AP and tried to salvage the landing. I ended up too high and should have gone around, but I hate to do that -- it's so time consuming. Now they'll probably send me back to the ticket counter!   Smiley

Hi Bruce.

Luckily for you and your passengers, this is Flight Sim and you can get away with doing that. I understand how you feel about doing a go around, I feel the same way. But if we really need to go around, then we should. Other than the too steep and too fast approach, it wasn't too bad at all. I'm just glad I wasn't one your passengers! Grin

Bruce, I need a double - extra strong amber drink after that approach!  Shocked

Mark is right, never try to salvage a bad approach. At 200 feet you were doing 2,000 feet per minute. You should have gotten WHOOP, WHOOP - PULL UP!

Of course I'm just nit-picken, but I sure need that drink.  Cool

Also, FYI never retract flaps or move anything while still on the runway. This was an old pilot rule so you did not move the wrong leaver and maybe retract the gear by mistake. We would always clear the runway and talk to ATC - and then we could clean-up the cockpit.

Lou ----

Of course Mark is correct!! But, as I said a missed approach adds a half hour to the flight, and it seems they always happen just about Amber Hour! What was it your buddy Hoot Gibson said ---- *They paid for a ride --- they got it!*

Oh yes, I took those annoying *Pull Up* and *Don't Sink* warnings out of the FSX sound folder! Haven't heard them in months!  Grin

Thanks for the tip on cleaning up after the runway exit! I'll remember that!

Am going to try to get from LAX to HNL next in PAA Clipper Northern Light. Back in the 60s flt PA 819 was a flt we used frequently ex LAX (get it--- exlax) as it allowed for a reasonable DEN LAX connex.

Let's see ---- that was a double, right?!  Wink

Oops. Even I raise the flaps and lower the spoiler while still on the runway. Embarrassed Not anymore though. Thanks Lou.

I thought the saying was "Any landing you walk away from, is a good landing". Your saying is similar.

I would do that too. We really don't want to show others just how bad we can be.
