Newbie: How to fly an ILS approach

Hi,
Name's Jim and I'm a new member here so please be gentle.   Undecided

To wit -- I only flew a small Cessna, 'back in the day' and strictly VFR to boot. So although I have some rudimentary knowledge of VOR tracking and ILS approaches, I'm totally ignorant of modern day IFR systems and procedures and particular when it comes to heavy jets.

I'm also a newbie to flight sims, and I'm presently trying to figure out to fly an approach with the CS 767.

For instance, I’m confused about which CMD AP to use as well as how to actually put the info into the Radio Control Panel.   For example, I was approaching JFK and wanted to fly an automatic ILS landing on RWY 13L, 111.50, Hdg. 135. So not knowing which radio to choose, I put in those numbers on both the ILS frequency radio as well as the VOR 1 radio. When I figured I was near enough to the airport, I hit the APP button, but nothing happened. IOW. I just flew past the airport.
So can anyone give me a heads-up as how to actually do this in plain English “ baby steps” Embarrassed

Thanks
Jim R.

Press SHIFT+8 to bring up the 2D Radio Panel and enter the ILS frequency and Heading in the third unit, in the center it has TEST and ILS written on it. You can also use the VC Aft Aisle Stand unit to tune the ILS frequency and Heading (see image).

In addition to your post Mark, I recommend that you use Air Traffic Control on Flight Sim (if you're not already) ATC will vector you to final approach so when you hear something like this, "American 482 turn left heading 090 descend and maintain 2,300 clear ILS runway 5 Left approach contact Indy tower on 123.950" when they give you the altitude to descend to in this case, 2,300 descend to that altitude so the aircraft can capture the Glide slope. Some time during the turn or after the turn, switch the approach hold on (APP button) and the aircraft will capture the ILS and land for you. Good luck and happy landings! Smiley
