Sound realistic?

Hi,
As much as I like CS707 work, something in the sound doesnt seem right. Specially inside the cockpit, accelerating full power, climbing, idle power, etc.

I flew 707s in my childhood many times a year but my ear is not precise to recall just from memory so I watched several 707 cockpit videos in youtube and compared to CS707. I invite anyone to do the same and check. The Captainsim sound seems more grave, bass tuned...while the real has more sharp whistling loud tunes. In cruise the main sound is wind. But on apporaches, climbing, take off taxiing I can spot big differences between the sim and real.

Im downloading a freeware sound set and will try it to see if it improves, or at least tweak and rename wav files changing those apropriate.

You could look at making some small changes to the sound.ini file found in the FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_B707-300\sound folder (back it up first, of course).

I'm very happy with the sound of the CS707-300 and am not really worried if it isn't exact. It's close enough for me. With all my extra payware add-on aircraft telling me to use different FSX sound settings for each of them, I ignore them and settle for a setting that I like across the range. Although I had edited some of the sound.ini files a long time ago, I can no longer be bothered, I would rather be flying them. Wink

Hi Mark, OK
To me part of the fun of the hobby is make it as close as possible to what I recall it was real.

This is my plan: Im buying the DVD from Skymaster 707. Then I will use my movie editor to extract the sounds, in mp3, and cut them in parts equel to the same time-length as the files in CS707-300. Then I will convert those files to wav.

Im not going to do it with every sound. For example, Im not touching gear sound, engine starters, flap, door, etc...but I will change wind, idle power, take-off power, thrust general, etc.

Wonder if it will give a better result? Im not sure how to modify sound.cfg to make the sound to a higher pitch, etc. I will only modify the wav files keeping the same sound.cfg and check the result. Smiley

I agree with Kapitan, the sounds are off for the engine. The JT3D had a distinctive whistling sound that lacks here in this addon, at high power and when going idle.

Wonder if anyone can help-guess here. I“ve identified the wavs that need to be tweaked but Im not sure in which part of the sim they become active:

I know all the wavs starting with "x" are exterior sounds. Im not touching those for now.

These are the ones need to be identified when they start playing:

707idle.wav     = Idle power (that“s easy)
707jet.wav      = ???
707rumble.wav = ???
707thrust.wav  = ???
707wind          = wind

any clues?

Studying the sound.cfg and using a tutorial from google on editing sound, my first discover is CS707 sound consists of 2 engines.

line 4 of sound.cfg
number_of_engines=2

Maybe CS team could explain why?

Anyway I also found out that the idle 4 engines runing consist of several wav files, including avionics, and some exterior sounds. I will have to mute each one of them to see later which needs tweaking in pitch or volume, or replaced altogether.

I made a video comparison between sound in CS707-300 FSX at 30,000 feet and a real 707 at the same altitiude and speed. Note the real sound is much sharper with strong wind noise. Throttles are middle way.

http://www.vimeo.com/19105463

As you can see, the difference is not minor...ITS BIG.
What is needed now is advice by CS support or other users on how to tweak the sound.cfg so the sound will resemble more like real. I dont think is just a matter of increasing wind from the Sound settings.
Taxi, idle, takeoff, approach will follow.
Thanks.

PS: Just discovered there is 707wind.wav file in the sound dir but its not used by captainsim (not mentioned in the sound.cfg), instead it uses the 4 standard wind sound that comes default with FSX in the main Fsx/Sound. Apparently they intended to put a more realistic sound, but gave up and released the addon with standard wind sound Sad

Well, I think that this has to be fixed in an upcoming patch.
Otherwise, they shouldn't write things like "Authentic sound set" since that's not accurate.

Filmed very close to the captain's seat in terms of position and angle.

And a few other 707 cockpit take-off videos:

It's impossible to not hear the difference IMO.

G/day Kapitan,  This is probablt a bit late but i know what the thrust wav is, its that jet thrust noise that comes up as you increase the throttles, i have the 707 dvd and the sound is there but a lot lower pitch and not as loud, it was annoting me so i deleted it, i had done it in the previous version. Just wondering if you have a lap top the reason i ask is that i do and the other day i cupped my hand around the speakers (which are facing the ceiling) and noticed the sound is much more realistic. My main problem with the sound is not hearing the distintive turbine buzz when the engines are at high revolutions and when i cup my hands around the speakers , i can hear it What i cant understand is that i have the another company 747 / audio env extreme airliner edition that has 737, 747 engine sound that i can hear the turbine buzz without cupping mu hand around the speakers. I have the same problem with all the cs aircraft. Cap Sim have by far the best  aircraft out there, ive just got get some ear phones or find a sound pack for the 707 757 and 727. Do you know of anywhere ? take care    cya  Jeff

TSS make some great aftermarket soundpacks.
The GE 767 is their best imo although it doesn't have the panning function of FSX but I certainly don't miss that.

For all who are looking for a very nice soundset: Check Avsim FSX Sounds for JT3D - there's a very nice and authentic soundset for the 707 there.

If you want to listen in, check the following video I made a while ago:
