Top 10 things to do with a BUFF on Friday night...

First off, let me say Howdy, my name is Dan, I’m new to this forum, and I drink because… wait, wrong forum.

This is my first Captain Sim aircraft, and WOW, if the rest are half as good as this I’m a guaranteed repeat customer. The BUFF has just become one of my centerpiece FSX aircraft. It brings me great pride to see the mighty and venerable Bravo-Five-Deuce, war wagon to end all war wagons, purveyor of peace through superior firepower, preferred mount of our hero Major Kong and dream job of Col. Dutch Holland; finally rendered in such immaculate detail and awe inspiring craftsmanship. To put it another, more complex way, I like it.

Soooooo I’ve already logged about 10 hours or so learning this magnificent beast, and here’s what I have so far. This list is NOT GRIPES, this is an amazing aircraft, and the items below are simply comments coming from an old USAF F.E. that wants everyone else to enjoy it as much as myself.

1) Did anyone else notice “Taileron” and “Radder” on the Hydraulics Panel, or the “Airplans” switch on the AR light panel?
2) The Air Refueling slipway switches are backwards, the normal position should be closed, and the slipway switch doesn’t actually open the doors. The master refuel switch/valve postion indicator is also backwards, it should be green when switch is open and vlave matches, barber pole otherwise.
3) Are the normal procedures from the J57 (JT3C) or TF33 (JT3D) model? There seems to a few things that don’t remember on the ’33  (my experience was with the TF-33-P-7), can any BUFF 'chiefs out there confirm this, I don't have access to any G/H tech data.
4) I get the “Rat Fort” joke on the co-rockets yoke, but can an old crew chief get a pop-up window with a wrench to beat that right seat yoke ape for defacing borrowed equipment?
5) The “Ejection Procedure” placard should be in all caps. There is an old stump-the-dummy question for USAF Aircrews that goes “Where are the lowercase letters in the cockpit?,” and an EP would NEVER be in lowercase lettering.
6) Where are the press releases and hoopla? I haven’t seen anything on Flightsim.com, Avsim, Simviation, Sim-Outhouse, CalCalssic, or any of the usual sites, we gotta’ get the word out! This isn’t just another 777 with a new FMC, this is the one and only BUFF!
7) Would the developers be amenable to allowing a peak at the XML coding for the fuel switches so a 2D popup can be coded for easier use?

Now on to the top 10 things to do with a BUFF on a Friday night…

1) Has anyone merged the civa INS yet? I just can’t bring myself to using the default GPS for navigation on this bird, (it would be like using an easy-bake oven for a wedding cake) and I’m trying to figure out the best way to plan an old fashion SIOP high-low-high double AAR.
2) Speaking of AAR, I’ve tried Mudpond Software’s formation flight toys, and even faking a 25,000 ft “ship” with AI carriers, but no luck so far. Anybody have any ideas for placing tankers to use Andy Niko and Jivko Rusev’s AAR guage?
3) Anyone figure out a tweak to do cart’ starts yet?
4) Who’s going to post the first multiplayer video of a MITO takeoff?
5) Any effects guys out there that can do a mushroom cloud FX? I’m thinking one would be nice at AMARC to make sure the torch doesn’t harm another beautiful BUFF.
6) Anyone figured out how to get the jetways to go to the crew hatch yet?
7) Why isn’t “Proceding due regard” a selctable resone to ATC?
8) Is there a Klaxon sound effect yet?
9) Is it cool to make the passenger announcements to the Radar Navigator?
10) Anyone tried the terrain avoidance system on the Grand Canyon yet?

---Any more ideas?

Thanks Captain Sim, the B-52 Driver package is truly a work of art, I hope enough interest is out there to develop the line with further models and updates!

Hi Dan.

Welcome to the forum.

As to the first 7 things. I hadn't noticed any of them. Been too busy driving this plane. I  have clocked up 10 - 12 hours in it so far. I think it is awesome. And the B-52 Driver was only release about 34 hours, or so, ago. Before that, it was the B-52 Exterior with the VC being aliased to the default 747 VC.

#1 first list. A typo? Should be rectified, though it doesn't bother me.

#5 first list. “Ejection Procedure”, I assume you are referring to just those two words and not the rest of the placard. Because the rest of the writing below it is in "ALL CAPITAL LETTERS" on mine.

#7 first list. There is bound to be a new forum, in the not too distant future, called something along the lines of B-52 Driver - It would be nice...., where you can suggest/request that a fuel switches 2D pop-up panel could be done. I doubt you'll get to see the code. I'll bet a lot will want a 2D autopilot too.

As for the INS, someone will do it, and I would think it could be soon. It just won't be done by me because there are others that are better at it than me and I'm too busy flying. Wink

#3 of the second list. On the Co-Pilots Side Panel:
Turn the Master Battery Switch ON
Turn the External Power Switch ON
Turn the four Generator Switches ON
Turn the Frequency And Voltmeter Selector Switch to CENTRAL TIP BUS
Then start using the Engine Start Switches
I have to tap the F2 key so that my throttles are above 0% or the engines wont start. Although this might not happen to everyone, it happens to me and it could be because I use a registered version of FSUIPC and have set it so that my joystick throttle when fully back it reads 0%. Before I registered FSUIPC my throttles when full back left the throttle levers in the VC at 1%.

#10 second list. That is a fantastic idea. You can try, I'll watch you crash burn. Or not.

I have answered those I feel I can. The rest I left alone. Maybe someone else can answer.

I too noticed the misprints,  but they don't bother me too much either.  Another one is on the EVS control panel,  says FLEER instead of FLIR.   Another "change" I noticed from the original BUFF release is the amount of time it takes for the bomb doors to close.   The original model had it correct,  but with the Driver installed,  it takes way too long for the doors to open and close.   I think the flight dynamics changed too.  Before I could land level or with the nose down slightly,  but now it approaches like an airliner,  with the nose pitched up way too much.  I'll have to try more landings to see if it was just me.   And one final thing I would love to see in an update would be to see the EVS turrets (under the nose) rotate around to the open position when the MFD's (radar displays) are turned on.  You rarely see a buff fly without them open.

As for a MITO,  I don't have a multiplayer mito recorded,  but I did use FSRecorder to record a MITO at Griffiss AFB.   I'll convert it to video and upload it as soon as I can.

This driver is an awesome update to a nearly perfect BUFF.   Thank you so much CaptainSim for releasing such an awesome product.   There are a few little things that can be improved or added,   but I am extremely pleased at what I have now.   Outstanding work!!!

Well, Back to Flying...

Oliveone, good call, that’s where we hid the "morale" photos too!

Markoz,
#5 Yes, its the top heading I'm referring too.

#7, I built some new camera views to take care of it, I will post them here too.

#3 on the second list, I'm actually referring to an alert response cartridge start, as demonstrated here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBfwtrwesjQ

Ironically, after 50+ starts, it appears that the timing and FX in the CS Buff are actually from a cart start instead of a huffer start. With a little procedural tweak you can actually do a pretty accurate cart start via:
All generators on,
Rapid start Pylon 1 and 4, (simulating engines 1 and 8)
After lightoff push throttle to 90% and engage Pylon 2 and 3 (simulating engines 2-7) starters
Passing 45% Pylon 1, starter off,
Passing 45% 2,3,4 starters off, prep for taxi.

When the wish list is started, we should start a master tweak list for the minor imperfections in this diamond.

I'm still working on the jetways.....  Wink

Hey guys, I fixed the typos! I made it look pretty good too I think! I'll post the results tomorrow! I'm a cockpit texture artist for my company, so you can trust me in that it looks like the rest of the cockpit, just spelled right!

Thats hilarious, I did the same thing. I also added the missing flow lines on the fuel panel. I'm just finishing the night maps now.

Do you mean the writing/lines on the panel so you what it controls and whether it is ON or OFF? I really hope so as the fuel panel is really awkward to manage at present.

Yes, I added the flow lines and check valves. The whole thing works sort of like a paint by number. The numbers on the panel match the procedure in the flight manual, however; if you just remember source-force-and-a-place-to-go, you can always just use the flowlines and valves to keep it sequenced.

I'm still working on the switchlines

Fantastic Dan! That will be a great help in knowing what ones to turn on or off.

BINGO! I figured out the switch maps, so now it has the correct flowlines, for day and night.

The panel in the picture is set up for Body-> Main tanks, Main Outboard wing and external isolated. I'm playing around with the valves now, and so far they all work as advertised. I'm in systems heaven, this jet rocks!

I'm new to Captain Sim, I don't know the formalities or legality of posting modded files. Would anyone mind filling me in so I don't break any rules or step on any toes?

As far as I know - You use mods at your own risk and Captain Sim takes no responsibility if you break it. It's the standard disclaimer. Others have done mods for the 757, 727 that I know of (or can remember) without getting into trouble. Quite a few have used, and still do use, them.

BUT

It wouldn't hurt to ask if it is OK do so. "Being polite" and doing it correctly can't hurt. Wink

BTW. those changes you have made look great.

Proof of systems performance, all valves work as advertised. The only parts that do not function are the four check valves, but they don't effect operation or capability. (In fact I’m not really sure why Boeing put them there, there are valves on both side of each one to control flow.)

Photo shows left external tank feeding #7&8 engines, with main tank pumps off.
Source--L. EXTERNAL
Force-- switch 17 (pumps on)
And a Place to go-- follow the lines across the bottom, up next to the AFT BODY, thru 14 and 10, across the top, thru 12 and into the #4 pylon manifold.

The engine guages in the upper left show the motors run fine like that!

The astute copilot will recognize that there are 3 other paths you can take also.
