Really quick, can anyone help me, its seems like there are problems after problems. I got the fmc to work (thank you for the replies, they were helpfull. But now when I put the selected speed which is 300 knots, the autopilot's speed hold just stays at 237 knots even though I said it to go to .80. Help!

I think it has something to do with the Cost Index used.

Also. The higher you go the slower the KIAS will be because the air is thinner.

If you mean that the Autopilot won't switch between KIAS and MACH. I have that problem too. I usually let the FMC control the speed until just before the Localizer and Approach stage of the flight, so I don't worry about it.

Thanks for replying, what should I set my cost index to? And everytime I engage the speed or heading hold, when I click to disengage it, it wont until I press the desengage button. Is this normal? And what exactly is the cost index?

I set the cost index at 0 (zero) for long distance flight and 100 (one hundred) for short flights.

0 = best fuel economy and longer range and slowest cruise speed
100 = worst fuel economy and less range and fastest cruise speed

I'm sure I saw an article (Captain Sim 767 forum I think) that states that the settings in the real world range from 0000 to 9999 but I'm not sure if that is how the FMC is programmed. Someone who knows better than me can (hopefully) tell you if I'm wrong.

I get pretty good results with those figures. It all comes down to fuel quantity plus cost index equals distance.

For example: I flew from YMML (Melbourne Australia) to RPLL (Manila Philippines) with 100% fuel and a cost index of 20 and arrive with sufficient fuel left over. The flight was somewhere around 3420 nm.
