How to navigate in the 727?

Hi,

Apologies if this is a dumb question. Anyway, I see that there is no INS/IRS/FMC in the 727. Given this, I'm wondering, is the navigation done entirely by VOR? Since GPS wasn't around in the original days of the 727, I'm assuming that this is also not an option if realism is desired.

I'm quite curious about this. Thanks for any information!

Yes, Flight it with a traditional navigation systems (VOR, ADF, RDMI, HDG mode and LOC mode) !

Of course you can RNAV to some degree, because your RDMI lets you set to both VOR and you can see your bearing on the HSI, but with only one DME counter and no NAV2 CDI it becomes difficult for this.

But yeah, it's all traditional NAV aids and dead reckoning, for the most part. Smiley

That's one thing I really love most about the old bird.

Now, here's a cheat for you. Smiley

Assign a keyboard or joystick button for the NAV/GPS switch.  Then if you toggle it you can get the GPS-popup to feed its data to the HSI, in which case the VOR/LOC mode of the AP will track it.

But better than that, IMHO, is to make your plan VOR to VOR in the flight planner, bring up your NavLog kneeboard, and tune your radios and courses manually.  It's just more fun this way, I think.

NOTE: I'm on hiatus, concentrating on flight training.  Most of what I'm flying right now is a C172N similar to what I'm training in.  I'll try to check in and answer questions when I can, but please don't be impatient, I have other priorities right now! Hey Bob,

Thanks for the extra tips!

Your idea of planning the flight VOR to VOR is exactly what I was planning to do. I agree that this is more fun, and more realistic. Cool to know that the GPS can be used in the sim if desired though.

I guess trans-Atlantic flights were not typically done by these aircraft back in the day for this reason? Or did they just take a bearing and stick to it the whole way across?

I also assume that modern 727's are now FMC/MCDU-equipped given the number of 727 cockpit photos I've seen lately that show this.

Take care, and thanks again.

IMHO
Well this is more a wish but it would be nice if we can implement the simfly Delco wich is a fantastic instrument.
Give a brake to the captain and FO for a cup of coffe or at list a brefing before descent.
I menage to install the simfly but only on the 2D view i miss on how to implement on the VC.
have a look here.
If any one can help would be great.

Has anyone tried VasFMC with this aircraft? For anyone not familiar, VasFMC is a great little freeware FMC that can be run on the same computer as FSX (or FS9), or it can be networked via WideFS for those who have it.
I used to use it all the time with freeware aircraft before I got heavy into payware quality aircraft with built in FMC's.

Here's the link: http://vas-project.org/

P.S. - I haven't tried the 2.0 Alpha version yet, so I can't speak for that version.

Robert -

but that remove all the charm of the old aircraft. But FMC fans should try anyway. It's more realistic than a GPS ! Smiley

There is no nav/gps button.

You can assign a key to it, maybe.

If you want to add a NAV/GPS button to your GPS window, replace your current GPS window in the panel.cfg with this:

[Window05]
size_mm=456,403
window_size=0.4 // Or 0.5 if you prefer larger window
position=8
background_color=0,0,0
visible=0
ident=GPS_PANEL
gauge00=fs9gps!gps_500,0,25
gauge01=Cessna!Nav_GPS_Annunciator,                     425, 0, 24, 22
gauge02=Cessna!Nav GPS Switch,                          400, 0, 24, 22

It uses the default Cessna gauge. It is nice because it doesnt' spoil the look of the panel, but is there when you need it (GPS window open).

Hey Matt, I just read your post above. Where exactly does this add the switch to, the actual GPS window or does it place a NAV/GPS switch on the actual front panel of the cockpit.? I was just curious because I was think about trying it. Currently for really long flights where I can monitor the NAV radios to tune VOR's I assignd Shift N for the Nav/GPS switch, but if I could actually have a visible swith on a panel somewhere I would prefer that.

Thanks

It adds the button and nav/gps status light from the default C-172 to the upper right corner of the GPS popup window itself.  I found that to be the easiest way to add it, and it's nice that it doesn't ruin the look of the VC.

Ok, I gotcha. I didn't know you could actuall add a switch to a pop up guage.

Would it be possible to add the switch to the pop up autopilot panel? Window #3 I think is the autopilot window. Like put the switch under the Autopilot mode selector knob on the left side.

I have no idea how you figure the locations.

Try this on for size:

[Window03]
Background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=427,130
position=2
visible=0
ident=10005
gauge00=Captain_Sim.p721.P12!P12_001_ap, 0,0, 427,106
gauge01=Cessna!Nav_GPS_Annunciator,                     49, 106, 24, 22
gauge02=Cessna!Nav GPS Switch,                          25, 106, 24, 22

The first two numbers after the name of the gauge are the coordinates (left/right, up/down) and the second two numbers are the size.  In this case I had to increase the height in the size_mm of the window to get the buttons on there.
