The future of 757 repaints. HDT & UHDT texturing.

Now most of the people in the forum know that I have knocked out a repaint or two for this already great 757 and her expansions models by Captain Sim.  You may have also noticed that I have joined a very prestigious group of texture artists Called “McPhat Studios”.  This has brought about a collaboration that will see the repaints for the CS 757 reach a whole new level of detail and ambiance.

McPhat Studios has been working on a whole new line of texturing for FSX aircraft.  HDT (High Definition Textures) and UHDT (Ultra High Definition Textures) are being created to bring a level of detail to aircraft textures never seen before in FSX.

Normal textures give a detail of an average of 40 to 60 pixels per meter (on the aircraft).  HDT brings this number up to between 101-200 pixels per meter (on the aircraft). UHDT surpasses 201 pixels and upwards per meter (on the aircraft).  The main limiting factor is the size of the actual PSD the texture artist can use.

Currently only the wings are in the McPhat workshop but the whole aircraft will get a McPhat make over from front to back and hopes to include all models of this already great FSX aircraft.

Just to give a teaser of what you can expect, here is the current progress that the McPhat artists have achieved with six hours of solid work.

Now imagine this wing view finished with the wear and tear, custom Spec and Bump maps added.  It will be like looking out over the wing of a real 757 inflight.

More details of what HDT and UHDT is all about can be found on the McPhat website using the link below.

http://www.mcphatstudios.net/index.php?/UHDT/

It is also planned to give the McPhat UHDT touch to Captain Sim’s C-130 X-perience in the future.

Please keep watching for more new and detailed screenshots as this project prgresses.

Dave,

That wing looks incredible!   Smiley
Many thanks to you and your collegues for the hard work that you do -but a special thanks to you for the value that you keep adding to this great 757. I come to this forum every day in anticipation of one of two things...either news of SP 4.2 or previews of another one of Dax's repaints!

Dax,

AMAZING! But tell me, what effect will this have on frame rates and when is the first repaint coming out?

excellent eye candy. I"m sure its big hit on frame rates. Might become mainstream with FS11 perhaps  Grin

Well this is hard to believe but in testing on various machines it has shown absolutly no difference in frame rates.  All FSX does is take a bigger texture file and layes it over the same area.  This has shown that it increases the detail of the aircraft whilst having no effect on game frame rates.

Unfortunatly this will not work in FS9.  FS9 restricts the size of the textures it uses.  FSX has no limit which means in theory you can create them as big as you want.  In practicallity the limit is the size of the acutal PSD fils used to make the repaint.

If you now take a look at the picture in this post you can now see the nearly completed UHDT wing texture.

We're finally getting somewhere. Normal mapping is still on the rough side, and speculars should be customized for the dirt.....

Here are a few new screenshots of the 757 forward fuse just to keep you up to date with the progress of the 757 UHDT paint kit.

Now you can see the rivet that have been created on the Spec and Bump maps.  They have been removed from the defuse map to create an overall effect of the light rather than just painted rivetes everywhere.

This is still just WIP (Work In Progress) and gives an idea of what to expect in the final release.
