very simply, first, you'll need to know some data from the arrival runway such as the CRS, the ILS Frequency and the GS Capture Altitude.

Normally, you must enter the ILS Freq and the CRS on the Pedestal. In FSX, it is good but on the FS9 version, you must enter that on the left and right panel (next to the MCP).

now; when you are at the good altitude and speed, intercept the ILS/GS by pressing APP on the MCP...

and the bird will capture both ILS and GS.

1 . maybe the runway didn't have a GS.
2 . maybe you was too high.

How are you sure that you was below ? What is the instrument you used ?

go to www.flightaware.com and put in the IACO code for your airport, then select Airport information /WXR. At the bottom of the page should be procedures for the runways if they exist. You will find that all US airports that Support commercial traffic have an ILS installed. Dont expect Private fields or grass strips to have them. THe Charts will also have the GSIA (glideslope intercept altitude) be at or below this point before the IAF (inital approach fix) Usualy a malteese cross, also marked IAF.

I have run into that too where I miss that the runway has the ILS, but no glidslope.  You have to look at the plate pretty close.  It should say CATII or CAT III available if it has full autoland capabilities.
