Title: Bought the "BUFF" - only something works....
Post by AndyEG on Jan 24th, 2024 at 7:50pm
Hello - don't now about exusing me or as it is useable in this forum, but I'm one of these ""Fools" that drives the FXS "in loyality".  ;) ;)
Bought the "BUFF" a few days ago and looked for instructions to start up the engines in a way that they will not only idle rather "produce" thrust.
I tried many things about fuel valves, electricity, battery - here are some videos on you tube - but the engines only idle, making a sound, they would start again, again and again.
The eight Tacho show idle-speed - and nothing else if moving the thrust levers.

Thank you for valuable tips. Thanks in advance.
Andy

Here's how I do it:

Turn the Power Switch ON (Co-Pilot's side panel (Battery Power Panel))
Turn the External Power Switch ON (Co-Pilot's side panel (between the Engine 1+3 Generator Switches and the Engine 5+7 Generator Switches))
Pull all the throttle levers down all the way.
I always make sure that all the fuel feed switches are aligned so that there won't be a problem with fuel feed to all the engines (once you get familiar with the B-52 BUFF fuel feed, you can set them as desired).
[i]Simple way from here:

Turn all Engine Start Switches ON (Co-Pilot's side panel (Engine Start Control Panel))
Once all 8 engines reach ~20% RPM (on the Engine Tachometers on the centre Engine Panel (2nd row of gauges), (they will stop increasing once they reach this point anyway)), then press the F1 key, followed by a single tap of the F3 key. This should start all engines. Once started, press the F1 key again.
Turn all four Generator switches (Co-Pilot's side panel Engine 1 Generator/Engine 3 Generator/Engine 5 Generator/Engine 7 Generator Switches)) ON
Turn the External Power Switch OFF.

You should be good to go.

The difficult way is:
Start each pair of engines seperately by pressing the E key, then 1 key (for engines 1 & 2), followed by the Eng 1 & 2 Start Switches, press F1 once the 2 engines reach ~20% RPM, then tap the F3 key, and once the engines fire up, press the F1 key again.
Follow the above procedure for engines 3 & 4 (E key, then 2 key), engines 5 & 6 (E key, then 3 key), and engines 7 & 8 (E key, then 4 key).
To return to control of all throttle levers (in sync) press the E key, then the 5 key.

Note: I always make sure that all the fuel feed switches are open (aligned) so that there won't be a problem with fuel feed to all the engines (once you get familiar with the B-52 BUFF fuel feed, you can set them as desired).
By "aligned" I mean if the line runs like this -(|)-, make sure the swich is like this -(-)-. If is a (<) switch, make sure it's like this -(<)-.

Engin start video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zu45XwRlzL0 (I uploaded it on April 11, 2011, so it's old). ;)

Although this video doesn't show a lot, it shows the pairs of engines be starting individually. You can also see the throttle lever movements used during the start procedure. You might need to watch it a few times to get the gist of what to do (I didn't have a microphone back then so there is no voiceover to help. Sorry).

Hi Markoz, I feared to get no answer about this very, very old problem - therefore many, many thanks about.  :D
Hm - the "simple way" doesn't work. How I wrote in the first post - the engines sound like trying to start and stop - like an endless loop sound.
The fuel feed switches are aligned - nevertheless: the endless loop sound.... .
Your Legendary F-104 - unfortunately made only for fs09  :'( - is easier to start.... .
(I'm just analyzing the start video with the BUFF  - phew......)

...don't know how to edit a post, the fuel-flow-indicators remain at 0 % - although this is observed:

Not sure why you can't start the engines, BUT... I wonder if you need to make sure to turn on the Avionics Switch!?

I have this turned on by default by having my default flight as the Cessna C-172 in a cold and dark setting, except that the Avionics switch is turned ON.
Most Captain Sim aircraft don't come with an Avionics switch (737 Captain (FSX/SE/P3D) being the exception), and I have found that this is the best way to guarantee that the Avionics are ON when loading a Captain Sim aircraft.

I did a short (3 min) video today, that I uploaded to YouTube this morning on how I start the engines. It's no different to the 2011 video really, except that I added instructions to it (in the explanation write up).
I don't upload many videos to YouTube anymore, so I don't know how to make them any clearer than how they show up  on there now.
I did the recording at 1920x1080 (maybe I should have used 2560x1440 (my default screen resolution), or perhaps higher to record it. Also, I use Nvidia Shadowplay to record my in-game videos.

New video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52pOwT9Pd0M

Edit ([timestamp=1706232151]). Starting without the Avionics being turned on made no difference to starting the engines for me.  :-?

Good evening/night to Victoria from old Europe  ;)...
your video is very helpful - until now I didn't need to activate the avionics master with an default-flight-plane (in my cause EXTRA 300) and after that the selection/change to - in this cause - the BUFF.
Therefore I wondered about the right external indicator bulb (orange) stayed dark - now it is enlightened. Already a step forward..... . ;)
Otherwise - engines refuse revving..... . :-[
But - I don't give up - this problem is small in comparison with the annoying 4-GB "threshold".... - always named OOM.... . :-/

Can you start the engines using the Ctrl+E keyboard shortcut?
I know it might not be the way you want to start them, after all that's how I prefer to do it. At least it would be a way to get them running without having to load a flight with the engines already running. :-/

...sadly news for me - not for you  ;): CTRL+E even doesn't work.
I "constructed" a new keyboard-combination CTRL+E and tap one or two times on F12 (fuel flow) for another "vulture" - F-16 "viper-den".... .Don't now, wether the image is attached.... - I try.
For this - it works. For the BUFF -not.

Also tried to load a flight with engines running (EXTRA or Cessna) - no success. Win 11 Pro/FSX SP 1 + 2 - sometimes it's a terrible "combination".... .

I acctually meant for you to load the "B-52 Cleared for takeoff (KNKX)" saved flight (which is added during the installation of the CS B-52):
At the FSX start screen, select LOAD, search for Â-52 Cleared for takeoff (KNKX) (I know. It should be B-52 Cleared for takeoff (KNKX), but this is how it is saved in Documents\Flight Simulator X Files folder for me during the installation of the B-52).
This will start FSX with the B-52 and hopefully the engines already started.

If this fails, then perhaps the B-52 didn't install completely. Turn OFF your Anti-Virus program, then reinstall it.
Another thing. Your AV might have deleted an importanat file for the B-52 after seeing it as a false positive for a virus (often a file might be seen as a Trojan).

Here is a list of all the files (there should be 26 files) that you should have in the FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\CS_B-52\panel folder:

Captain_sim.b520.A01
Captain_sim.b520.A14
Captain_sim.b520.AP
Captain_sim.b520.B12
Captain_sim.b520.BP
Captain_sim.b520.CP
Captain_sim.b520.general
Captain_sim.b520.icons
Captain_sim.b520.L11
Captain_sim.b520.L13
Captain_sim.b520.L19
Captain_sim.b520.L25
Captain_sim.b520.L36
Captain_sim.b520.L38
Captain_sim.b520.L43
Captain_sim.b520.L49
Captain_sim.b520.L50
Captain_sim.b520.LP
Captain_sim.b520.NDL
Captain_sim.b520.OH
Captain_sim.b520.P20
Captain_sim.b520.RP
Captain_sim.b520.sound.gau
Captain_sim.b520.sys.gau
Captain_sim.b520.terrain.dll
panel

The first 22 in the list are cab (.cab) files, and the panel file is a cfg (.cfg) file. You probably don't see the file extensions because these are turned off for common files (by default) in Windows.
If any are missing, I would expect it to be the Captain_sim.b520.sys.gau file, because that is the xxx.sys.gau files in Captain Sim products are the most commen ones to get flagged as a false positive by my AV.
If a file is missing, go to you AV virus Chest/Vault, if it's there, select it, then choose to restore it and add it to the "exclusions" list so the AV won't remove it again.

I hope this helps solve you engines not starting problem.

Hi - I reinstalled the BUFF - and there is no Document like you described in this folder to load.  :(

The Documents folder can be opened in/with Windows Explorer. It should be up the near the top.

You can also navigate to it:

Open Windows Explorer and select the "C:" Drive > Users > YourUserName > Documents > Flight Simulator X Files, the scroll through until you find the Â-52 Cleared for takeoff (KNKX) file

Replace YourUserName with your Windows login name (i.e. if your login user name is John Smith, then you select the John Smith folder).

...WOW! Good evening! I found the folder at this way, executed it with the FSX-exe.... - and: BUFF stands on the Runway KNKX, engines running, then chosed another Airport in my Region - and it was successfull!
But - as expected  8-) :( 8-) - after one minute of flight - the 4 GB threshold. [smiley=wallbash.gif]
Admitted - simulating flight over a very spectacular scenery - the annoying FSX-Problem.
Thank you very, very much for the patient support! :D
(Now i try to start the engines manually - it has to work....)

...as editing forepost: Starting Engines "normally" also works. I only started a flight you suggested - and everything works normal.
F****** FSX is full of mysteries or bugs.... .  [smiley=wallbash.gif]
I'm tensed about how long it works.... .
Again many thanks to "down under".... .

I don't what it's function is, or even if it has one. I didn't find anything in the manual (csb521_manual2.pdf) about it, unless I missed it somehow.

...clearly to forget this - after such a long time. ;)
(The last postings about this are from 2020) - and if I had asked the correct question with search function, I would have found this: https://www.captainsim.org/forum/csf.pl?num=1581521449  :o

Now only the Landing-Light-Switch is missing..... [smiley=happy.gif]

Ahh. So not the button on the right side if the pilot's yoke (left side of the co-pilot's yoke).
I didn't realise you were asking about turning on the Terrain Radar. Sorry.

..oh - definitly there is fun with it. Airliners are boring - in the long run. You now this?
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Starring Peter Sellers in three characters, Slim Pickens incomparable as Major Kong at the controls of an A-Series B-52... .
For real: The US air force deployed its B-52 bombers in Vietnam, the first Gulf war, in Afghanistan and in the Kosovo. In his documentary, Hartmut Bitomsky follows the historical traces of this machine, which for many people became a symbol of power and destruction.
