Title: Can't get out of Approach Mode
Post by bob34 on Feb 27th, 2018 at 3:18am
Hi.
I was on final with APP armed on the AP, and fully established on the loc and GS when ATC asked me to break off and do a 360 for spacing. I tried clicking on heading-select - nothing. Switched off the autopilot, then tried going back to HS, but APP remained armed. Turned the flight directors on and off just to try something else, but APP light still on and couldn't use heading select. Is there a trick to clearing this?
Thanks,

Bob

I did a test with the 757-200 Captain III Autoland (KSEA) flight, and when I clicked one of the TO/GA buttons on the throttle levers, the APP light went out imediately, and the throttles went to full throttle, and the 757 started climbing.

This is actually correct behavior in the real aircraft. Once APP has been armed and LOC and G/S are captured, the only way to select a different mode is to either select TO/GA mode or disengage the autopilot and turn both flight directors off, then on. If APP is armed but either LOC or G/S is not captured, you are still able to select a different autopilot mode.
