Title: FMC for 737-200
Post by captjames on May 17th, 2016 at 5:10pm
Good afternoon chaps!

Apologies if this has been asked/ answered already.

I just wondered if anyone knows a  way to "retrofit" the 737 to have an FMC to fly L/VNAV and proper flightplans?

Thanks in advance,

James

I don't think so. But what I do is I use the default FSX flight planner (which is a somewhat painstaking process), load up the CS 737, and use the FSX Garmin G-500 GPS (Shift+6). The G-500 allows for flight planning, waypoints, and some older SIDS and STARS that for the most part aren't part of the current AIRAC cycle (1606).  :)

Hello James.

I have used the Flight 1 GTN 750 with success in the Tristar. The AP will follow the LNav.

As for VNav, well the 737-200 had only the CWS pitch, the IAS hold and the V/S mode (in later models).

The PDCS in the CS 737 gives some references to the pilot for climb rates, but no automated Vertical Speed. Later versions of the 737 featured early FMC. These had a link to the EPR and eventually the throttles in an Auto Throttle mode.  They went on to be the all singing FMC we see in the -600/800 etc.

So I would check out the F1 GTN 750. If you engage the VOR Nav and the GPS Switch on the glareshield, the aircraft should follow the GPS course from the GTN.

Cheers
David

Further to my last post (I tried to edit it but failed)

In the L1011, if you are using the F1 GTN 750 to navigate in LNav, you need to set the Navigation switch on the Glareshield to "ONS" (On-board Navigation System) and not FMS or VOR. The lateral navigation will then use the Heading Bug to steer the aircraft.

It does work well. Take a look at my video here (at 15 minutes):-

https://youtu.be/ffq_Prw92gU

In the CS 737-200 you need the GPS switch on (Glare Shield) and be in Heading Mode, then the F1 GTN 750 will use the heading bug to steer. (Also make sure the GTN 750 is set in GPS mode)

I don't think there is an FMC available for the CS 737-200. Since its intended to be an early version with CWS and VOR Nav... :)

A certain "other" company doing the 737-200c, uses the "Universal" FMC, which is actually out of a Dash 8? But their Auto throttle doesn't work properly and they have no Flight Directors? :o

Best Regards

David

How do I do this...usually there is a CDI switch...but I don't see it.

At the base edge of the GTN 750 there are some selectable icons. Ensure that the CDI icon for GPS is selected. It should read GPS in the window. The alternative selection is VOR.

Also, endure "unsuspend" is selected. You will see the curved magenta line appear for the LNav and provided the aircraft's autopilot controls are set to receive the input from the GTN, the aircraft should follow the path.

The aircraft's VOR/HDI receiver should be working with the GTN. But in the L1011, it's the HDG bug that gets controlled by the GTN. I have no control over the HDG bug during GTN LNav. When HDG bug is required, I de select GTN GPS, going to VOR and briefly disengage the autopilot. Then re engage the autopilot and select HDG.

Hope this helps. :)

Regards
David

For those of you that must have a FMS in the 737-200...

I have been successful at installing the ISG Smiths FMS that will control LNAV (not VNAV) including XML code that will adjust the heading bug as well!

I've been testing for a week now and works fantastic!

Also an integrated navigation display where the radar goes in the VC with a hot-spot toggle for a 2D pop-up.

If anyone is interested in this mod please let me know  ;)

It might be worth looking for this mod in the Avsim library. Look for mods created by Paul Tally.
