I use AirEd, and as long as you backup the original AIR file, you can make changes to it that might help you with what you are trying to achieve.

If the gauges are programmed into the VC model (CS_B52_interior.MDL), then the only way to swap the inop ALTIMETER with the working ALTIMETER, would be to hack (modify) that file. Though I would copy the working one over to the inop right ALTIMETER!
