Title: FSX for Steam is available!
Post by Markoz on Dec 19th, 2014 at 9:21am
At the time of my writing this, it's on sale for $US4.99!!! An absolute bargain! So take the opportunity to get it cheap NOW!
[edit][timestamp=1418993558] The $4.99 deal ends in approximately 29 hours and 7 minutes from the time of this edit. ;)[/edit]

Here is the link to the steam FSX forum Topic Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition Change Log

I have the Captain Sim L-1011 and L-1011F working in Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (which I will write as FSX-SE from here on), but I forgot some things I need to do, so when I finish my first short flight in it (in around half an hour), I will do those things that still need doing. ;)

Later on, I will try each Captain Sim product for FSX in FSX-SE, and (hopefully) figure out exactly what needs to be done to get them working. Dovetail Games make no guarantees that ALL 3rd party addons will work, so it might be up to the developers to get behind it.

So far, FSX-SE seems to be very frame rate friendly, but it's hard for me to tell because it is very bare when compared to my FSX with heaps of addons, like Orbx FTX AU, NZ & Global scenery.

Hi Fellas,

I don't understand the hype surrounding this release. FSX has been around since 2006 and everyone here obviously has a copy. I don't see anything on Dovetail's website that says they are going to upgrade the code or bring it to the next level of modern state of the art graphics. While it might be cheap, why bother buying a product we already have?

Am I missing something?  :-[

Thanks also to Mark for testing it for everyone. I don't know what we would do without him?

When I installed FSX-SE, it chose ULTRA settings for my computer, and with no addons whatsoever, I was getting better frame rates than I ever remember  seeing from a straight out install of FSX and Acceleration! It does seem better, but I could be imagining it. :-/

The talk in the Steam Forums is that it does seem to perform better than FSX Standard/Deluxe with Acceleration, or FSX Gold (which is what it is only on Steam). People are saying that "this product", or "that product" does/doesn't work, but unless you really know what your doing when it comes to porting them over, it can easily end up being a miss instead of a hit.

I can imagine the creators of the FSX to P3D Migration Tool rushing to make a migration tool for FSX to FSX for Steam! :D ;D

I have FSX Steam Edition and Captain Sim 757-200.  When I load the plane the CDU screen is black.  Is there something wrong?

It's is chocked full of bugs. It seems they didn't properly test it when they ported it over to the Steam API.

Dovetail has made some performance upgrades, and fixed some outstanding bugs.  Some addons are affected because they changed the file structure, like where the FSX.cfg file is located.  One such is FSUIPC.  Mr Dowson has bought the SE and was going to upgrade FSUIPC, but unfortunately his dev pc died, and won't be able to get to it until after the Holidays.

He released it yesterday, actually. I'd post a link, but the forum doesn't allow it without a certain number of posts...  :-?

Ha, awww, a Christmas present.  I kind of figured he would try to do it.

It's nice to have FSUIPC and all, but the Steam version still needs a lot of work.

So, would any of you say this is worth buying? Considering that its "riddled" with bugs? Or should i wait until some updates come out?  :-?

So, is there no way to get the CDU working for the Steam Edition?  Or did I install it wrong, and it won't show up?

I didn't pick it up. I'm waiting. There are just too many issues right now, some of them harkening back to when FSX first came out in 2006.

NOTE: I will eventually copy all my Captain Sim FSX aircraft to FSX-SE to see what is needed to be done to get them working.

I disagree. I have not had a single problem with FSX-SE since I installed it and played it. I don't know why you would be having problems though. :-/

I have FSX-SE and the CDU is not working.  Shows as a black box where the CDU should be.

I have it working great so far - I will explain how I did it in the 757 version 4.x (FSX ONLY) forum. Just give me time to get the testing done please.

TBH, it was only $5, 4 Euros, at the time, no reason to not to have picked it up if only to let it sit til they fixed these alleged issues.  Although, I haven't run into any issues, aside from FSUIPC, and performance is much improved over FSX prime.

FSUIPC has been updated for FSX-SE: FSUIPC 4.938 available now for FSX Steam Edition!.

The link is to download it is here: Updated modules

And I repeat that I have not encountered any bugs yet! Unless you call the missing engine smoke, nav and strobe lights from Captain Sim products.

Once I start flying in FSX-SE, It looks and feels exactly like the default FSX, but I do seem to get better frame rates.

I do hear that repeated more often and its certainly a positive that it runs better. However, I haven't seen anything concrete with regards to the Steam version having better performance. Hell, I can max out default FSX and easily exceed a 100 frames, so I'm not entirely certain what increased performance is being seen.

The Steam FSX Support forums also have topics cropping up relating to the good 'ol UIAutomationCore.dll issue.

I was just looking at the Steam page and noticed FSX has a P-51.
Does the standard FSX gold come with a Mustang?
I don't fly the standard acft and am not near my pc so can't have a peek.

I know it's only $4.99 but I'm having trouble justifying buying it. Is it really that much better?
Note I do not have any framerate issues on my current install.

PS> The way the aussie dollar has fallen off a cliff with the new government $4.99 USD is now $7.  :P

Hmm, I've been thinking about this a little more...

When I first heard of Dovetail Games I thought they were making a new simulator. Turns out it was FSX.
I was told they had another game called Railworks which I happened to go and check out. After reading their forums most were leaving the game due to heavily overpriced DLC, think $20 USD for a reskin!  :o

I think what might be going on here is they are trying to capture existing users by charging a pittance for the base game. Then let the DLC roll in. My fear is that they will tie-up with certain developers and that will be it, then they can charge what they like whilst screwing the developers. They have the form and it's all in the railworks forum if you care to read.

I'm not saying don't get it, just be aware of what might happen down the track.

You want to change your livery from Delta to United...That'll be 20 buckaroos thanks....  :(

The P-51 comes with Acceleration and FSX Gold.

Although I haven't finished testing all my Captain Sim FSX products on FSX-SE yet, the ones I have work quite well, with only the nav and strobe lights not showing. See my Topic here: CS aircraft in FSX-SE - my results.

Also, there was this from Tanya:

So that will help. :)

There is a sticky topic in the FSX-SE forum on steam with a list of compatible payware products for FSX-SE, and the list is HUGE, so Dovetail Games are going have to make changes to FSX-SE to stop that. Is/was that Dovetail Games original idea? I don't know. :-/

When I bought it, it worked out to be $AU6.32 ($6.14 for the game and $0.18 internation money transfer on my Debit Card), and according to XE.com, the exchange rate is higher ($AU6.10) today, than i was on the day I originally bought it. $AU6.32 is still pretty cheap by my books. :D ;D

I just downloaded the latest FSDT GSX installer (1.9.0.6) and got a pleasant surprise. First it detected P3Dv2 (nothing new there), and asked me if I wated to install it there, I had not done so yet, so I installed it there.
Then it detected FSX-SE, and asked if I wanted installed there, so I said yes.
On the third run of the installer, it installed into FSX.

Seing as it found all three installations and ask if I wanted it installed in them all, it must be compatible with FSX-SE already. ;D

The solution for missing lights and smoke is this:

Joao Alfredo wrote on Jan 1st, 2015 at 8:36pm:
In FSX-SE the lights problem and some effects already has a solution, just reduce special effects to medium.

João Alfredo

Many thanks to João Alfredo for providing the answer to that problem. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

If on captain sim 757 you encounter a blank grey box where the FMC, etc should be try this;

The Steam Edition of FSX uses a custom version of simconnect.

Many addons use simconnect for displaying objects and if you are having problems with aircraft display in the Steam Edition you may be able to fix them by installing the original FSX simconnect

In your Steam FSX folder (usually in Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX\ ) look in SDK\Core Utilities Kit\SimConnect SDK\LegacyInterfaces\FSX-XPACK\

You should see SimConnect.msi in that folder. Run this to install the original (legacy) version of simconnect

Happy flying  :)
