I read something written by someone claiming that running FSX in Windowed Mode would achieve better frame rates, so I tried it out and found it to be true and stuck with it ever since. If I press CTRL+ENTER and go into Full Screen Mode, the frame rates drop straight away, so it's back to Windowed Mode every time.

Windowed Mode also allows me to switch to and from other tasks while doing long haul flights without having to press CTRL+ENTER twice to get rid of the blacked out FSX screen that always happens when I switch tasks in Full Screen Mode. :-/
