Title: Windows 8 to 8.1 Question
Post by Berlopez on Dec 4th, 2013 at 9:35am
Hi all I updated my Windows 8 to 8.1; FSX is running fine.
I have a question a folder has come up on my desktop.

MS.NET
In it there's this:

dotNetFx40_Full_setup.exe
MSNET.nvi   Nvi file
MSNet Ext.dll    program extention

What is this? And should I run/Execute it? I've done a Little research and have come up with this, still lost?

Hi Berlopez , I also upgraded to 8.1 and am running OK . I never noticed the files you mentioned , but they seem to refer to Windows 7 versions and earlier , so I would ignore it . By the way , are you still getting joystick disconnects or did you ever have that problem?

It's rather complex to explain what dotnet is and does. It should, and probably was, installed at the time that Windows 8.1 was installed.
When I upgraded Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, at some stage near the end of the upgrade, I saw dotnet being installed on my computer. I was never asked if I wanted it installed, it just installed it (I would have allowed it to be installed even if it had asked anyway).

If you want to know if it's already installed, go to the Control Panel > Programs > click on Uninstall a program > Scroll down the list looking for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (you might actually find that you have v4.5 or better).

rservice thanks for your reply. I have never experienced the J.S disconnect problem.

Mark I just went to the control panel Uninstalla program and the and the MS Framework 4 or later isn't listed?

Hi Bernardo.

You don't seem have anything installed on your computer that requires dotnet, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Only install it if it starts telling you that it needs to be.

Orbx scenery requires dotnet, which is the main reason I have it installed. It could be being used by something else, but I don't know if it is. :)

It forms part of Windows 8 and 8.1 and is included in the list you see when you click on control panel\programs and features\ Turn Windows features on or off.
Windows 8 and 8.1 do not install it as default.
It doesn't appear in the list of installed programs.
I think I remember that in Windows 7 it did appear in the list.

Although the files are included in the download, they must be extracted into Windows after installation. Possibly, this has been done for you or the installation files have been added for you later.

If you try to use software that requires it, you will normally see a warning message, so if you don't have it installed and haven't seen any and everything works, I suspect you don't need it (yet).

However, my advice would be to leave the files where they are for future reference.

Regards,
Nick

It hasn't asked to be installed. If I recall correctly it was needed in Windows 7,as you say. I'll save it to my temp. folders in case somethng asks for it?
