From what I recall was said on the L.M. forums, both the Academic and Professional licensed users would be required to repurchase P3D v2.0. Version 1.x licenses would get upgrades included. Purchasers of the v2.0  Academic and Professional licenses will get all point releases of v2.0 for no charge. Only users under the Developer licenses will get each released version plus point releases of P3D for no additional charge as we pay $10 US per month for it's continued use.

Using the Academic license would make sense for most users as it includes all point release updates. It's just like purchasing new versions of Microsoft Flight Simulator every 2 years or so as we did in the past, updates were free, new versions were not. P3D is following the same type of model.
