Title: Re: TWA 800

I'm not into conspiracies, but this is an area I have some empirical knowledge.

If you remember the post in this thread about the 727 over Detroit that lost control and went supersonic, well the NTSB and FAA were very quick to blame the pilots saying they pulled circuit breakers and put the trailing edge flaps to 2 degrees to be able to fly the plane which was too heavy    for FL390. Later, it was found that the real culprit was the Boeing rudder actuator. In fact, this faulty actuator was discovered to be the cause of several other "loss of control" crashes - A United 737 in COS and a USAir 737 in PIT. Both the 727 & 737 used the same actuators. In fact as an instructor, I saw many reports of 727 rudder actuator problems over the years - nothing was ever done since the pilots were able to keep the plane under control and land safely.

In the TWA 800 event, I knew the crew very well and in fact spoke to the Captain just hours before the crash. I had flown that same 747 many times. None of the pilots believed the center tank story & in fact the FAA was never able to make the tank explode in several tests. One of the TWA pilots who was assigned to the investigation was someone I worked with for many years. He was a very serious and capable pilot and instructor. He was the one who took a small piece of the seat cushion that had some strange substance on it. The substance turned out to be some sort of rocket fuel residue. He was arrested and kept in house arrest for a year. This is a person I trust.

Lets see who comes forward to blow the whistle.
