Title: Taxiways and B52
Post by dpoos on Jun 7th, 2013 at 6:48pm
Hi all,
It's been a log time since I've read through this site.  Quick question.  I've noticed that several of the airports where SAC B 52's were station (Anderson-Guam) for example, along with others, have taxiways leading up to active runways where the outriggers (wing landing gear) on the B 52's are rolling through the dirt and the taxiway signs on both sides of the taxiway as my B 52 is centered on the center stripe heading for the active.  Is this "real world"?
Thought 1:  The FSX airport taxiways at these airports are not accurate.
                 (my guess)
Thought 2:  The B-52 model is out of scale (doesn't appear that way to me)
Thought 3:  This is "real world" and I am wrong in thinking that the USAF would make it's "real world" pilots and aircrews have to dodge taxi signs, ditches, gas tanks, etc. in such a valuable piece of equipment in order to get to the active on a SAC or other USAF base.
Comments or answers?
Any good airport scenery out there for former SAC bases?
Note:  Just read a really good book on real world B-52 operations entitled "Flying from the Black Hole - The B52 Navigator-Bombardiers of Vietnam" Naval Institute Press by Robert O. Harder.

Thanks for any replies
Dean

Unless you have a FSX airport that has been updated/modified or is payway scenery it will not be to scale.   Typical runways for a B-52 are 200ft wide.   Those may not be shown in default FSX.

Thanks for the reply Don-P1126.  That's kind of what I thought.  Anyone else got any ideas....or sources for good USAF-SAC base scenery?

There is a free package available ‘Airport Design Editor’ by Scruffy Duck Software. This will enable you to edit the default airports to realistic measurements as well as adding infrastructure. Using Google Earth I roughly measured Guams taxiways (52.5 Meters) and runways (66.2 Meters) and modified them accordingly. Also Concreted the runways and some of the taxiways as they appeared to look and relocating all the taxi signs etc.

I'm a former B-52G & KC-135A crew chief.... our runway at the former Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan was 300' wide.
