Title: Where Is GPS?
Post by flynby on Apr 12th, 2012 at 12:59am
Just purchased B-52.  Had NO idea what I was getting into!  At 66, this could get interesting if I can figure where everything is at.  Was not even aware had manuals.
Where is GPS Switch found?
Thanks

If you mean a NAV/GPS Switch, there isn't one. I got around this by creating a Keyboard Command for the NAV 1/GPS (toggle). I use CTRL+SHIFT+N, but you can use any key combination you like, or a button on the joystick/yoke/controller.

The Navigation Mode Selector set to Tacan places the AP into a GPS heading mode. Make sure you have the 'Flight Director' selected. Follows a flight plan nicely.

I forgot about that. I haven't flown the B-52 in quite a while and I must be getting old as well! :(

Mr. Markoz,
I am definitely not a computer geek!!  Question:  Did you use something like Winkey to create this new command?  I am using Windows 7.

Or, can I use FS Panel and insert the GPS into the B-52?  I found this does not always work in payware programs.  Sometimes, the item cannot be viewed.

Appreciate your response.

Hi flynby

Start FSX. When on the FSX Start Screen select Settings > Controls > Buttons/Keys. Scroll down (or select Radios in Event categary then scroll down) until you find NAV 1/GPS (toggle) , highlight it and click on New Assignment. Create the combination of keys you want to use for switching between NAV and GPS navigation then click OK.

That's it, you are done. It doesn't really have anything to do with being a computer geek. ;)

Hey Mark, I tried the suggestion you mentioned.  Used the same Ctrl+Shift+N.  Also tried the Panel Studio.  Neither worked.

Now that you have mentioned Panel Studio, I'm thinking that this is what you were wanting all along. If it is, I'm sorry I didn't figure it out sooner. :(

If this IS what you want, you will need to add the GPS to the panel.cfg. Here is how:

Make sure you backup your panel.cfg BEFORE making any changes!!!

Open the panel.cfg with Notepad.

Under [Windows Titles] make he next window Window02=GPS. Like this:

[Window Titles]
Window00=Main
Window01=Simicons
Window02=GPS

Next. Scroll down to [VCockpit01], place the cursor on the empty line above it and add this:

[Window02]
background_color=0,0,0
size_mm=456,378
position=0
visible=0
ident=GPS_PANEL
gauge00=fs9gps!gps_500, 0,0,456,378

That's it, you have added the MSFS default GPS to the B-52.

When in the B-52 in FSX, press SHIFT+3 and you will have the GPS there for you to use. position=0 means it will be displayed in the top left corner of the screen. The positions=n works like this:

0  1  2
3  4  5
6  7  8

with 0 being top left, 8 being bottom right and 4 being the center of the screen. You can change it to suit yourself, 0 is where I wanted it to be.

If you can't or don't want to do that yourself, just email me using the email link in this reply and I will send you a copy of my my modified panel.cfg.

Sir, I am embarrassed to ask publicly; but how did you assign the "Shift+3" keystroke to the GPS view/hide?
I want to try and add another popup gauge to the B-52.
Thanks...

I didn't assign SHIFT+3 to open the GPS panel.

By default it works like this:

Window00 = is opened using SHIFT+1 (in the CS B-52 you won't see anything).
Window01 = is opened using SHIFT+2
Window02 = is opened using SHIFT+3 (The GPS is Window03=GPS so SHIFT+3 opens it)
                  As each windows is added, the next SHIFT+n opens it up to:
Window08 = is opened using SHIFT+9

There could be a way to do it for greater number of windows, but the only time I have seen that done, is in the Flight Sim Labs Concorde and I don't know how they did it.

If yours aren't working, it is possible that you changed them.

Here is a pic of where to find them in the Settings > Controls >Buttons / Keys

Mark, thanks to you - I am now installing some other gauges to aid in landings.  Struggling to find the Automatic Pilot right now, but it is starting to come together.
Thanks again for your patience...

It sounds like you don't have the manuals. All the information you need on the Autopilot is in ‘B-52 Driver’ FLIGHT MANUAL Part II – Aircraft and Systems (csb521_manual2.pdf), pages 46, 47.
If you don't have them, you can download them from here: http://www.captainsim.com/products/x520/manuals.html.

Mark; I have another question.  Now that I have the desired gauges (thanks to you), I notice they seem to "float".
Example:  begin taxiing by advancing the throttle.  The panel seems to go downward and my new gauges seems to go upward -  if that makes any sense.  Is there a way to correct this??
And also, can I make my new gauge visible all the time?  Tried to change the panel cfg autopilot window to a "1" instead of "0", but that did not work.
Tried to send a picture but not authorized due to post count.
Thank so much for your time

Sorry. I somehow missed the question.

I don't understand how or why they would "float". :(

As far as I know. No you can't.

The visible=1 only applies to the 2D Cockpit and not the VC. Unfortunately.

Happy to hear that you are enjoying the B-52. It is a great plane to fly. ;)
