Title: VNAV not reaching cruising altitude
Post by boeing247 on Dec 3rd, 2011 at 9:00pm
I've tried this multiple times and whenever I attempt using VNAV, it directs the aircraft to whatever altitude the alt hold is set to and then leaves it there and turns off autothrottle. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

That is how it works.  Increase your Alt Hold on the MCP beyond the cruise altitude and it should work great.

Ah. Thanks. There isn't a lot of documentation on it in any of the manuals, surprisingly.

With VNAV, if the altitude indicator is less than the cruise flight level set in the PERF page (or VNAV page) of the CDU, then the Autothrottle will switch to SPEED HOLD (speed is displayed on the IAS/MACH Indicator) and you will also be in Altitude HOLD mode.

I have had this happen a few times, simply because the Cruise Altitude in the CDU was higher than that which I entered into the Altitude Indicator. I guess it's because I didn't double check everything!
Where was my First Officer when I need him? ;D

All I can say is that if I had a F/O to correct all my mistakes, you'd never see me on these forums!

If I had a First Officer, I would be sacked and he would become the Captain and would then have a FO of his own!
:D ;D :D ;D
